I have been using notepad.exe for a while now to keep my calendar. I really don't like all the fancy software outlook (or sunbird for thunderbird) with all it's priorities levels, categories, time/data, and in general complexity. For example, every week I use this template:
Calendar:
Monday

Tuesday

Wednesday

Thursday

Friday

Weekend

ToDo:
Monday

Tuesday

Wednesday

Thursday

Friday

Weekend

And fill in appointments, meetings, classes, due dates, in the Calendar part. And then daily "to do whenever" and notes, in the ToDo part.

However, I really wish I had a piece of software that was simple and allowed me to do this same thing.

My query: What do you fellow forum.anandtech'ers use?

You better have "Nov 18: party like a madman for the VT/MD game" in outlook already.

Palm OS Desktop software! Even though its designed to work with palm handhelds - it is excellent stand-alone software - I used it for the same things you are looking for - for over a year without a handheld. And, its FREE.
Set alarms, trepeating tasks, memos, to-do lists (with reminders and notes) - all can be organized by catagories too. You can't go wrong with it. You do not need a palm to use it. When you download - just pick the Tungsten E model - since its the most popular and if you buy one, chances are that it will be the Tungsten E.

i currently use outlook, though I am looking into Sunbird. I'm a bit leery it's only version 0.2, a lot of the features are not implemented yet.

I use a little desktop one - rainlendar. Nothing to fancy, but it gets the job done and it is quick to look at.

I DLed that. Would be perfect if I could display a daily todo list. Maybe I just haven't figured out how to do that yet...
