Planning to Overclock

This will be my first time building a pc as well as overclocking one. I have read all the guides for overclocking an AMD and just need some tech help.

mobo: cant decide, all the topics confuse me though might go with asus or dfi
processor: athlon 64 venice 3000+
memory: ocz performance series
power: rosewill rp500
OS: dunno, cheap one i guess...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I believe the DFI will provide you with higher memory voltage if you want to do some serious overclocking. The 3000+ is a good choice for overclocking, but if you expect to get to 2.6-2.8 like a lot of people are getting with San Diego's you'll probably be disappointed. If 2.2-2.4 is fine with you, the 3000+ is a good choice. Can't really go wrong with OCZ memory, they work very closely with users on their support forums. Top knotch tech support in my opinion. I don't know much about Rosewill power supplies, haven't heard anything about them. You might consider one of OCZ's power supplies.
As far as the OS... if you're adventurous, I'd go with WinXP x64. Driver support is pretty good, but there are still some compatability issues and hardware vendors who haven't written 64-bit drivers. If you just want something cheap that works, XP Home would be your only choice unless you're willing to run a Linux distro.

So?

mobo😀fi
processor: 3000+venice, not going to overclock much
memory: ocz performance series
power: hmmm OCZ i guess
OS: heh im on a budget so XP Home🙁

I have a $1200 budget to construct a pc; with a monitor, dvd burner, the works.
Can anyone suggest a good computer for a guy with only $1200?

I'd say it depends on which video card and cpu you want. I'd recommend an X2 cpu but since they're so expensive right now they might push you over-budget.

Heres my recommendation

Antec Perfomance TX640B case with 400w power supply $105

EPOX EP-9NPA Ultra motherboard $105.99

A64 3700+ San Diego w/HSF $324.95

1GB Corsair Value select memory $87.85

Seagate Barracuda 250gb SATA hard drive $121

NEC 3540A DVD Burner $45.99

Fuji Plus FP-988D 19" 12ms LCD Monitor $249.99 after MIR

Windows XP Home SP2 $85.95

This totals $1126.72, add keyboard/mouse and shipping charges and you probably just over $1200. I priced out everything at newegg out of convience, you can shop around and save a few more dollars

Opps! forgot the video card, drop the SD3700+ back to a Venice 3000+ which knocks off $180 and add a 6600GT or X800

You are my god!

Still need OS and monitor, so I'd suggest you shave like 100 bucks from the prices above to be able to afford them. I went with the HIS video 'cause it has nice cooling, the spinpoint harddrive 'cause it's very quiet (or at least, very quiet compared to the rest), the rosewill powersupply 'cause it's cheap and seems good. The centurion case 'cause I think it looks cool, heh.

hmmm shoouldnt i have some sort of removable media drive or something?
I dont want a floppy drive, so any alternatives?
*im a noob*😛

Are you sure? I have not really looked to see what people were getting with the 3000 venice, but I remember people were getting 2.6-2.8 with winchester, even on the stock cooling.

Venice 3000+ has some juice in it. I'm running it at 2.7 with Stock HSF atm. Gonna stress test it soon for stability, if not I'll bump it down to 2.6~2.65, voltage is at 1.55v.

Yeah most AMD64's are pretty nice on stock HSF...makes you wonder why people spend $50 on a Zalman/Thermalright 😛

If you are a Gamer:

  • Mobo: DFI Lanparty NF4 UT-D
    CPU: 3000+ Venice
VidCard: Powercolor X800XL/PRO or eVGA 6600GT (half price - less performance)
Memory: OCZ DDR500 VX 2x512MB or Mushkin Redline 2x512MB DDR500
    PSU: Forton Blue Storm 500W

If you want top of the line:
(if you have the money you can go also with a SLI Setup)

  • Mobo: DFI Lanparty NF4 UT-D
    CPU: X2 4800+
    VidCard: eVGA 7800GTX
    Memory: Corsair Ballistix DDR500 2x1GB
PSU: PC Power & Cooling 510 DELUXE SLI

I just put together a system like y'all are talking about. Here's what I went with:

- EPoX EP-9NPA+ SLi Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard
- Athlon64 3000+ Venice core
- XFX 6800GT PCi-E
- 2 gb (1gb stick x 2) of Mushkin value ram
- Thermalright XP-90 CPU cooler, Chieftec case, and X-Connect 500W PS

Total cost was a little less than $900 after a few rebates. Originally I was thinking about going with an nForce4 Ultra motherboard, but I figured for $40 it was worth it to go with an SLI mb. Hopefully in 6-12 months I can plop in another 6800GT and get a decent performance increase.

I was thinking about just trying out the stock AMD heatsink/fan, but I figured it would be more trouble than it was worth if I decided later on to use an aftermarket HSF so I just went with the Thermalright XP-90 and Panaflo fan for about $40 shipped.
