I'm switching over from Charter Cable and getting DirecTv. Are there any promotions or packages that I should look into? Or should I just sign up with their 3 for 1 system price which ends up costing me about $40/month for the first 6 months and $50/month afterwards. Need advice. TIA

Make sure the guy that installs the dish does it correctly, if done right you should almost never have an outage due to weather. My Dad got the installation right the second time though, so it's definately doable if you're installing it yourself.

Get the triple LNB dish and of course, TIVO... TIVO... TIVO...

If you don't plan on watching more than two TVs at a time... you can run a signal sender or remote sender to save a bit on monthly fees.

Pray it doesn't rain. I had Direct TV for over a year....every freaking time it rained the picture went to sh1t or would just go the fvck out. Maybe it has improved since then but as far as I'm concerned Direct TV can suck it.

As a side note....mr parents have Dish Network at their place on the lake and haven't had problems with it like I did with DirectTV. If it rains really hard the picutre will degrade, but as of yet they have never totally lost the picture.

They have a DirecTV DVR with Tivo. Is that any good? Is it worth $99?

Thanks for the great advice so far.

Definitely get DirecTivo. Now that I have it, I can't imagine paying for TV without it.

Tivo is great. It's worth the $99 but note that it's also an extra 4.99 a month. And also note that the installer has to route TWO lines to that reciver to get full functionality.

You also need access to a phone line when you set it up (and it will nag you constantly afterwards if it isn't connected to one).

Can I link it up to my computer so I can keep the shows on my computer? If I can, I can hook it up to my XBOX and watch it in my car (whenever I get a chance to put the xbox in my car).

Make sure you get the Samsung receiver. In my opinion it is much much nicer to use than the RCA one my grandparents got.

Sony recievers > * from what I've seen. Too bad you can't find them anywhere.

I live in Portland OR, where it rains 9+ months of the year, and I don't know of anyone who loses their signal even occasionally.

I'm guessing that maybe your dish wasn't tweaked just right, or your line of sight to the satellites was questionable. Considering that both Dish and DirecTV use almost identical technologies, and that your parents don't have the same issues that you had, leads me to believe my guess is probably accurate.

And yes, DirecTiVo is one of the best inventions of this decade. I don't watch a lot of TV, but when I do find the time to watch, there's ALWAYS something interesting recorded. :)

I have DirecTV with a TiVo unit and the triple dual LNB multi-sat dish (18"x20" dish), and I love it. I've had it since January, and I've never experienced an outage of signal yet.

If you're able to get locals in your area, BE SURE to check if you'll need the triple dual LNB multi-sat dish to get those said locals.
