Planning to BackPack Europe

3 Guys. It's our first BackPacking trip. Found Deals to begin in London. Anyone have suggested schedules or places to visit? We do plan on getting a EuroPass. Is 1 week enough?

1 week is way too short. thats 3 cities max.

I did like 6 cities in 2 weeks and found that too short.

also, Eurail pass does not cover Great Britain.

LOL. 1 week enough??? I would do London and select locations in Scotland and Ireland in that time...max!

I did 8 countries in 6 weeks in July/August 2002 (Greece, Italy, France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, and Sweden) and that was exhausting.

I would say more but I got to fly off to San Francisco in a few hours...

That's like taking a week to tour the US. If you have only a week to work with I would choose one or two places and explore them in depth.

thanks for the info everyone....we just happened to find pretty good flight deals to london during the spring break time. but it looks like it's better to wait for some ppl to graduate and we'll go this summer.

No, a week is not enough.

Can't let your experience sour ya 🙂
Lots of other nice countries, you just aren't in one.

don't let this discourage you from staying the spring break week in london. you can have a blast there during that week.

then you can do the whole europe trip in the summer.

for one weak its better to explore one city well instead of spending most of the time in trains trying to see as much as you can

Edit: whoops forgot to put in my part.

Good advice! We were just in London for five nights and had a great time. The best part: no lines or crowds at Stonehenge! (you need a tour bus or train ride to get out there)

Anyhow, a week is not nearly enough for a full trip around Europe so go to London, have a nice time, and then hit the Continent this summer. Note: this is a doubly good plan because BritRail != Eurail. That's right, you'd need different passes. What a PITA, eh?

For your summer trip, should you take it, some advice: book hostels in advance, b/c they fill-up SUPER fast in the summer.

7 days
- 2 days for travel to and from
- 2 days for jet lag to and from
= 3 days to backpack Europe? 😕

1 week is enough time to get a decent feel for one city unless you plan to do a Mario Perillo 12 countries in 5 days bus tour...

sweet...we're booked...so we're spending the week in london. we've got a hotel near picadelli (sp) square...everyone's saying that's a decent place to hang out.

Picadilly Circus is a poor man's Times Square. Take a couple of pics, wander into the Virgin Megastore and then move on to some real tourism. Good, central location for a lot of stuff, though. Anyway, I really did just get from London four days ago, so shoot me a PM if you want some tips or suggestions.

Let me leave you with this bit of advice: get a city map, you will need it.

If you're going to make the effort to go, at least try to stay longer than a week. If you've only got one week, just stick in London.

I spent 7 months hitchhiking and backpacking throughout Europe a few years back, and it was absolutely brilliant. I managed to avoid most big cities, but of those few I did hit, Prague was by far the finest (mugging notwithstanding).

Quit your job, take a sabbatical, leave of absence, whatever. Just try to stretch it out, you won't be sorry!
