I currently have an athlon 500 which I wanna give to my brother if I upgrade.
current system:
Athlon 500
Microstar 6167 (for those unfamiliar, its one of the first motherboards for the athlon chips)
512 PC133 Infineon
SB Live! (sucks ;))
Pioneer 16x DVD-rom

right now, thinking of partial upgrading to these parts:
Thunderbird 1.4ghz 266fsb
ECS S5A
new soundcard, either TB Santa-cruz, TB fortisimmo II, Hercules GTXP (but I heard drivers suck)
maybe a yamaha 16x CDRW (I don't want burnproof or any technology of that type)

well, have any suggestions?
I'm thinking of keeping the ram I have right now since I heard DDR doesn't really provide much of a boost.
soundcards I would like some suggestions for sure. looking for something with digital optical out... and no muddled or crappy sound quality (willing to pay lots)

Anyway, I'm either gonna be upgrading on tuesday, or if not tuesday, then January.
so gimme some answers, thanks to all!

edit: accidently pressed enter in the thread title... OOPS

audigy is out, people have been saying good things about it. why don't you want any burnproof? do you think there's a price concern or something? i think you would be very happy with a 16x liteon, and if you don't want to burnproof, then you don't have to use it. it's a very good drive and inexpensive as well.

Yeah, for the sound card i would take a look at the Audigy, which has been getting great reviews all around. Like m1ke101 says, why no burn proof?

no burnproof because it leaves that little gap in between the burns...
although it has absolutely not effect on playback of the CD... I hate imperfections (even if subconscious)...
