Planning New Years trip to New York

Hi, I'm planning to go to New York for a couple nights to experience New Years Eve. About 10 21 year olds are going, and I need help finding a hotel. Conditions:

1. We need it to be cheap. We're all students, and would prefer to spend as little as possible.

2. We want it to be close to the action (Times Square?)

3. I don't mind doing something "illegal" like squeezing 4 people in a two person room (unless it's risky).

So I apprectiate hearing about your experiences in the Big Apple during the New Year, and the hotels you've stayed at, prices, etc.

Thanks!

it's REALLY hard to get a cheap hotel close to times square in general. at this time of year, it will be even more expensive and much harder to get for 10 people.

you may have to make a lot of alterations to that plan.

You may want to look for a place in one of the other boroughs or even Jersey and then head to Times Square that morning and stake out a spot.

Stay in Jersey. You will not find a cheap hotel in Manhattan especially at that time of the year, so forget about staying within miles of Times Square. You may even have problems finding a hotel in NJ. Best of luck!

You won't find anything cheap there. And Time Square is awful during New Year's.

Yeah, you'll need to get to Times Square by 4 PM if you want a good viewing spot for the ball drop. Trust me, I did it ONCE, and don't plan on doing it again :)

I'd also recommend staying outside of the city and taking the train in. Hotels around Times Square are expensive to start with, and are usually booked months in advance for New Years.

Yeah, I did it as well... when it was freezing. Never doing it again but at least I can say I did it.

I've been doing some research on this trip after posting this thread, and noticed how many people have not enjoyed Times Square. So we'll find something else to do when the ball drops. The trip is still on and I'm still looking for hotels. I relayed your advice of getting an out of town hotel, and am currently awaiting replies. AS for my hotel search: please comment on this finding:

Thanks alot! your feedback is appreciated.

i went for 2003 to 2004. we booked 1 week before we went. got in a hotel 1 block away from where the ball drops for 130 bucks a night.

it ruled.

our only problem is we didn't know what bars to go to. we did end up seeing louis black at one of the bars though.

For the full NYC experience, sleep on the (E) train, just like the bums do! It never goes above ground, so the train stays nice and warm, all night long.
