I'm planning a trip to Japan in November. I speak zero Japanese, but I will have a friend there that speaks Japanese and will show me around for 3 days. Tentatively, I plan to spend 2 days in Kyoto, 1 day in Osaka, and 2 days in Tokyo.

Has anyone been there? What are some "must see" landmarks/establishments? My friend will be there for my stay in Osaka and Tokyo, so I'll pretty much be on my own in Kyoto.

I've been, but we spent minimal time in Tokyo. Most of it was in Koryiama. I can't remember any names of the sites, but we just chilled in the city and drove around some mountsides and checked out some temples and what not. I am pretty sure we visited the same temple that at one point tom green, on his show, acted like a total baffoon at. We had my brother acting as a guide (he had rudimentry japanesse). I don't know how we would have done without him, although you can quicklly pick up some basic phrases like how to order food and what not.

Also, since people figure there is a high chance you don't understand their language they'll be unlikely to expect much from you in terms of much beyond ordering some food or whatever, unless you show them you're fluent. It was a fun time and an interesting taste.

My advice is fill up on american tv and music if you like it, because the pop music and tv they have there is...interesting...

Oh yes and they can't drive for crap over there!

my sis just got back 2 weeks ago from a 3-week training in japan. She stayed @ toyota city though, but she said digi-cams. SLR cameras and divi-camcorders are cheap. She bought a Nikon 4500 for 300 bux (equivalent). Anyway, just an FYI.

Enjoy the trip!!!

I really like it over there. Go see Osaka Castle, or ANY of the many Castles and Shrines.
Try to NOT eat at McD's et al. There are plenty of local places with the plastic models of food they serve so finding something to eat isn't a problem.
Get an easy phrase book. It will help you ask where the toilet is, etc.
Good shoes with thick sox, gloves and a leather jacket. It'll be getting cold by then.
Have fun.

First, get this book, as the author includes the phonetic pronunciations (muy importante)
Linky wa koko desu!
How are you travelling? Check into a week long Railpass and whether it includes the Shinkansen (believe some do and some don't). The Railpass can only be purchased OUTSIDE Japan. Bullet train from Kyoto/Osaka to Tokyo about two and half to three and half hours (depends on what kind of Shinkansen). For metropolitan areas, trains are the best way to go.
Write to (or E-mail) Japanese Imperial Household Agency to get passes to see Imperial Palace in Kyoto. The pass must be requested one month prior (for foreigners may be two weeks). A must see, however, may skip Imperial Summer Palace outside Kyoto. Too much other stuff to list.
About the only thing I thought worth the time in Osaka is Osaka-jo (Osaka castle). But, you may want to visit Universal Studios (just opened last year) close to Osaka. Can easily reach Osaka-jo by train, tour and return to Kyoto in a morning, so may be better to stay Kyoto three nights and then up to Tokyo.
For just walking around to soak up Tokyo atmosphere, Shibuya would be better than Shinjuku. Shibuya, Shinjuku, Tokyo and Akihabara all easily reached on Yamanote-sen (Yamanote line) which is a train line that runs in a big circle in Tokyo.
PDF zoomable map of JR trains in Tokyo. Contrary to popular opinion, electronics are NOT drastically cheaper here. May save a few bucks on some items, but for computer stuff, newegg usually just as good or better. Same goes for cameras and camcorders.
FYI, have been to Kyoto twice, Osaka twice and go to Akihabara about once a month.
Have some pics can send (have to change size first). PM if interested.

Hm. I am now faced with the option of spending 7 days traveling across Europe. I would have a friend there the whole time (he's been across Europe twice).

errr...Japan or across Europe. Decisions...decisions...
