I'm planning a move from Buffalo, NY to Orlando, FL, sometime in late December, and i've never done this kind of thing before and was looking for some tips to help me out.

I'll be moving my entire bedroom, part of a home office, basically the whole kitchen, and a pair of living room chairs, and possibly a couch and loveseat. I have been told that i should be able to move all this for under $500 yet i haven't gotten a quote under $1,000 yet. Any suggestions to help me on my way?

Thanks in advance guys.

Yeah, just go the rental way and do it yourself. This way you know your stuff is getting handled appropriately and the drive would be kinda fun and scenic too!

i like the idea of renting a U-Haul except that it'll cost about $1200 to move all my stuff and tow my car along with me, which is waaaayyyy out of my price range right now.

Buffalo to Atlanta - 16-17 hours
Atlanta to ORlando - 7 hours
Total trip time - 24 hours
Drive 12 hours a day and stop at a hotel in the middle. Cheapest option available. Should get you there in less than $150.

it's gonna cost about $1000 to rent a truck and a trailer.
your best bet is to shop around online and then call to see if you can get a better price
eg: call penske and say 'u haul quoted me this can u beat it?'
avoid the last two weeks of the month for better rates

www.penske.com
www.uhaul.com
www.ryder.com
www.yellowtruck.com

i'd avoid uhaul if possible, i've heard too many times how they have overbooked trucks.

Have you even checked on a uhaul? You are talking like uhaul will cost you $1200, which I know will not. Even if you get a car dolly for the back of the uhaul to tow the car behind you. Still the cheapest way to go is to drive yourself using uhaul or some other truck rental company.

That's my suggestion ;)

actually i have checked UHaul, which is where i came up with the $1200 price quote, which is how much it ended up being for the truck and car dolly that i needed. i'd rather pay a moving company and drive down on my own than rent a Uhaul for that price

Try Penske - Penske.com

800-222-0277, IIRC. I stared at the back of a Penske truck long enough to memorize it.. :p (We moved from NH to Gainesville, FL).

Ewww dude, why are you moving down here, of all places? Let me try and dissuade you from doing such a thing.

1.) Mosquitos. It's Orlando, they'll eat you alive.
2.) Lovebugs. Nothing like getting lovebugs in the middle of coitus splattered on your windshield
3.) Humidity. Right now, it's like a step into death, it envelops you, it's NASTY. And this goes on between april - october.
4.) Hurricanes/Tropical Storms/Flooding. Don't think I need to elaborate.
5.) Traffic. Orlando is tourist central. Idiot foreign drivers, plus idiot snowbirds from the Northeast, plus idiot old people, plus idiots like me from florida equals bad driving experience.

That being said, your best bet is what's already been said, rent a U-Haul or get a moving serivce. Or you could trade your intrepid in for an F-150 and you can rent a trailer.

me and my former college roomates are going down there for a year or so, one friend is going to school there, and me and the other kid are going to take a "year off" before figuring out where we're headed for good. i'm sick of buffalo, so i wanted to go somewhere warm, and this opportunity presented itself, so here i am

Sounds like a good plan. Personally, I wanted to do the same, just in somewhere that doesnt have humidity over 50% constantly, like California.

the other roomate went to San Diego, but after looking at cost of living and things liek that, i realized it'd be a lot more economical for me to go to Orlando for a year (maybe 2, who knows). I'm looking forward to it though, getting out of snowbound buffalo for awhile should be a welcome change of pace for me. i'll have to pm you sometiem to find out more on what to do and where to go in orlando andy

Being in Florida myself, I have to agree with the list of 5 reasons why not to move here.

The bugs are also at the top of my list too.
