For a 9700 pro, what is my goal to achieve for gpu speed/mem speed. I've been unable to find more information concerning overclocking video cards. From searching around I saw radclocker and ati tools and I do not exactly understand how it works. Also, I saw volt modding but I plan to stay away from that.

I would stay away from ati tool myself.

go here:http://www.omegadrivers.net/

download those drivers and there will be a tab in your control panel (double click on the red ati box after installing) called "radlinker" increase your gpu and mem speeds from there. Go up slowly (5-10mhz at a time) and run 3dmark after each overclock. If there aren't any artifacts then you can go higher. Do the GPU and mem o/c's separatly (ie. find max mem setting then go on to find max gpu setting).

HOWEVER! if you are using stock cooling i would recommend o/cing very much at all.

id stick with proper ati drivers and get radlinker or just the oc utlity here http://www28.brinkster.com/chrisww1942/

as for your goal, it should be to find the highest stable and artifact free clock speeds for your card. every card has its own limits so just folow Cawchy87's advice and turn it up slow until you see issues and then back it off a bit.

I like atitool.

I set a clock, VPU or RAM, one at a time and then run the test for a certain amount of time to see if it's stable. I never use maxOC. Then when you have both clocks, run them together and check the stability again.

ATItool is like Prime95 to me.

Thanks for the info people. I will not plan to use my stock heat sink and fan. I will place a water block and ram sinks on it then I'll play with the settings. I just wanted to know how to play with the settings.

Be careful with the memory; it usually won't run much faster than its rated speed.

I have my 9700NP flashed to a 9700PRO, then overclocked to 360(core)/340(memory). My card has 2.8ns Samsung chips.

I prefer PowerStrip to set the clockspeeds and atitool to test for stability.

ati tool has never detected artifacts for me. It had my gpu clocked up to 605 without detecting artifacts (9600xt) as soon as i closed it my computer locked up and vpu recover came on. Since then i haven't trusted it. PowerStrip is also very effective since you can change it 1mhz at a time.

VPU recover? Why are you doing that you little baby?:D You should always disable VPU recover; it's nothing but a nuisance in my experience.

If you don't want to use atitool you could always just loop 3Dmark01/03 for awhile, then come back and look for artifacts.
