How much memory are you guys running for this?

I'm using 512 and I seem to page almost constantly. I'm thinking of moving to a gig and wondered if anyone has had luck with this. My fear is I'll drop another stick in and it wont make any difference (it's not really paging constantly - it's loading pieces of the map I think)

Everyone else out there enjoying this game? Sony's done a good job balancing the gameplay - having to earn qualifications does wonders for keeping the tards out of the pilot seat. In tribes or bf1942 you never know if you're taking your life in your hands when you step onto a transport that someone else is piloting/driving.

I use a gig and it consumes about 800 mb.

I agree, gameplay is very balanced. I wish, however, they would implement Platoons soon.

800, not surprised. I'm gonna newegg myself a stick today.

My one gripe about the gameplay:
I'm on a planet where my team is a bit shorthanded and we get our @sses handed to us almost continuously. We don't have the numbers to take out bases head-on so we have to grab the unoccupied ones and then 'dig-in' to fight off the larger numbers...problem is you dont get any experience for taking unoccupied bases so you never advance. Normally I'd just jump to one of the other two teams (probably the smaller of the two - I'm all for the underdog) but Sony won't let you without deleting your character. Since I'm paying monthly to be someone else's whipping boy I'm not really happy about it.

I'm not sure if they'll add platoons or not - They might just stick with squads but add another layer to the command communication channel.

I just checked the webpage and sure enough my team is getting massacred again (See the purple guys on planet Emerald on www.planetside.com).

That did the trick. I brought it up to 1gig yesterday and the paging/thrashing/loads are gone now.

Why does Planetside need so much memory? Is that common for MMORPGs? It wouldn't seem to be the case; my friend plays a lot of MMORPGs and I've never heard of 1GB of ram being even suggested for smooth gameplay.

Many games 'require' 1gb of ram nowadays. They'll still run without that much, but you'll get slowdowns and harddrive activity.

There is no "load time" between levels so it has to move portions of the map (and all associated textures) into and out of memory as you walk around. In the case of planetside it's a MMOFPS instead of a MMORPG so pulling data off disk isn't going to be fast enough. There are a ton of players out there - each one withing a certain distance of you has data associated that must be loaded.

It's just big and fast paced man!

Planetside still needs some retooling, i agree the XP system is crap. However, the devs ARE going to change it, just a matter of when. (you would also be surprised, I defended a base with a 10 man squad for about an hour till help arrived... we gained at least 15,000 total XP)

That's downright ridiculous! So in addition to paying $40 for the game, and $13 a month to play (my own guess), now you have to fork over extra money for 512mb of ram (generously assuming the average gamer has 512MB). Ridiculous.

Nah I'll play one of the games in the 90% majority that do not require more than 512 MB to play smoothly. Thanks though,
