Yes folks, it IS coming.

The excerpt from Smedley's blog that you WANT to read right here:

To me, Planetside Next means we get a chance to take the essence of everything that was fun in Planetside and make it a lot better. Massive battles on a scale no other FPS will touch. None of this 64 player stuff. REALLY MASSIVE. With much better organization, and a tight focus on making sure the action is always going on, with awesome graphics.

If there is any game... and I mean ANY game that I really, truly hope that SOE can pull off and not turn into crap, it will be Planetside Next.

PS: I know there was mention about Planetside Next before, but this deserves it's own... thread.

They have my money as long as they don't go the road of Global Agenda or Huxley.

I think there is a fundamental problem with this game though. While my K/D counter would equal 100/6 during some awesome Liberator bombing runs, that means someone else's k/d counter is 6/100. Not so much fun for them.

Better yet, my favorite was watching the aircraft fall out of the sky and OOPS land on an AMS instakilling about 70 pour souls.

My best MMO memories were from Planetside beta... I regret not playing it beyond beta, but I hope I can get in on the next round of action. I already took their survey that takes suggestions for the new one.

Planetside's biggest downfall. It was ahead of it's time and back then, nobody wanted to pay monthly to play a game. "Pay to play FPS? OMGWTFBBQ!?!"

Planetsides biggest downfall was requiring 2 full clips of ammunition to kill someone with a basic gun, and horrible hitboxes to boot.

Jackhammer was an instagib. Lasher wasn't too bad either, maybe a 1.5 sec ttk, but it shot around cover and corners. MCG was longer, but also longer range and with a ridiculously large clip.

And I hope by "horrible hitboxes" you mean "horrible hitbox", because their was only one per person. :)

Er, it wasn't 2 full clips by any means, unless you were going up against a MAX. As Zensal said, the jackhammer was pretty much a 1 shot. Hell, the regular shotty was 2 or 3 shot-kills. The cycler, if used properly, could kill in less than a single clip. The lasher (post upgrade) was insane. The Pulsar wasn't bad either, like a mini sniper rifle. If you took the time to aim, it was a single clip to kill.

Hell, the repeater would take down someone in non-MAX armor in less than a clip.

The hitboxes weren't horrible... because of the latency involved for that time period, you had to lead your targets extremely carefully. Playing a sniper against moving targets, there were days that I would lead a full inch out. Against stationary targets, well that was a turkey shoot.

I hope they leave the spawn tubes or at least something like it. I'm so tired of clearing out a room or area in other FPSes and then getting shot in the back by someone who just spawned in the area I JUST CLEARED.

It also helped to keep the battle lines drawn.

And maybe some trees that are a little less uberstrong.

Planetsides downfall was the vehicles. Squishy combat was fun, tankside not so fun.

Oh and the fuck up where gamecards never ran out so most people were playing for free.

When it worked it was fantastic, some of my best gaming moments came from it.

Other times it could be sooooooooooooo boring.

Organization was key. Some nights my outfit would have a full platoon fielded. Typically 10 infantry and/or MAXes in a Galaxy dropship, 10 tanks or armored vehicles, and 10 Reavers or Mosquitos. Never got boring taking on a 3:1 disadvantage and still winning.

Of course, some nights no one would be on and you would be one of the "zerg" or the masses that just swarm to the next base or retreat back from attacks. That get's old real fast.

Battlefield doesn't come close to the war that rages in Planetside. It's hard to explain to someone who has never played Planetside, but it really isn't like any FPS out there. Yes you are fighting for an objective, so it sounds a lot like a game like Battlefield. But.. its Battlefield x10. A lot of people had the same feelings as you, including myself, who now regret not playing the game. Because to this day, no other FPS has offered the same experience. I still have beta screenshots. It was also the only beta I ever got actual CD's to install the beta client rather than a download.

It shows a little better in videos.

Short Video

Longer, more Stratgic video

The second video was actually pretty typical of a good night. Lots of good strategy, with a little more bsing then them though.

Watch the skys above the battles, or just the battlefields. There is so much gunfire and nearly all of it is actual people.

wow looks pretty epic... did it have any performance issues due to such large player capacity? how does the server keep up with everything going on?

In a word? Yes. Back when I played, it struggled with a x1800xt and Opty 165 OC'ed.

It would also max my ~1.5/300 connection in the larger battles.

Inside bases, I would typically see 90-100 FPS, but outside during battles, it could drop to 20-30 FPS occasionally.

Lag was the biggest problem though.

I also have no idea how they did it with the servers.

They were forced to cap populations per continent even in beta. But even the caps were higher than any FPS you'll play, and the lattice system they developed focused the fight. Latency was still an issue, and although the latency is probably the same in any other MMO it's the fact that it is an FPS that makes it so bad. Twitch combat needs fast networking. Still, the battles were intense and fun. I was so epic in a Reaver in beta, whole squads would go after me.

Basic gun of course being a "not advanced gun".

And yes, by poor hitboxes i meant... there werent any.

As long as they put in multiple spawn rooms, multiple generators, and multiple command points per base. There was nothing more annoying than "Gens, Tubes then cap" at every since base, especially the ones where the towers were a mile drive from the base. Mind you, the mechanic was great, because it gave infiltrators a job, but when you have one infiltrator "prepping" a base for cap by himself... it was annoying.

The suppressor? God that was an awesome gun. Second to the cycler. Yes, it had a smaller clip, but it did a good bit of damage. But then again, why would you want an open unlock weapon to be as powerful as a specialized gun that you have to cert for anyway?

And even with 1 hitbox, there were hitboxes.

I played PlanetSide for 2 months before I got tired of the latency. It's one thing to have a 250-300ms ping in a MMORPG but an entirely different animal to experience that in an MMOFPS. To be interested in buying Planetside Next at all I would need to be involved in a beta and get <150ms ping times.

It was a big problem early on, but by the time I joined, I typically had pings around 100ms, and in huge battles, sometimes 150ms.

They can't be doing that again though. This game needs to be working and spewing awesomeness on release day.

Maybe 2 spawn rooms, but I don't think the others would work as well.

I know that they were flirting with developing sectional bases vs. all being in one building. That would solve some problems with repetitiveness.
