planescape: torment

Got sick of playing 1st person shooters and with no set release date for oblivion (at the time) I finally got around to installing and playing planescape.

I had already played all of the other infinity engine games but I think I saved the best one for last.

This game is so very good; to me it easily surpasses the other infinity engine (icewind dale, bg, etc) games in terms of roleplaying; in particular the extra dialogue options for having high wis/int/cha.

good: too much to mention
bad: fixed 800*600 resolution

It is in my top 5 of all games I've played in the last 15 years, along with Fallout 1 - 2, Jagged Alliance 2 and the original Doom.

Kef7, its 640x480 resolution not 800x600.

Oops, maybe that is why it looked so pixellated on my 21" CRT. 😱

But hopefully the older/dated graphics won't scare people away from playing.

One of the best. But it is very difficult for a newcomer to get past the dated appearance (like with the isometric games, Fallout, BG, etc ).

FANTASTIC game. I was so hoping that there will be a remake of it with more modern graphics... perhaps a fan created version with NWN.

great characters, i loved the skull dude, can't remember his name

Mort? I love the way you learn more and more about your character (and companions) as the game progresses, esp. since you start out with amnesia. Kinda like 'Memento'.

I'm curious to know what people think of Arcanum?

*minor spoiler*
Also, was there ever talk about a sequel to planescape?

Depending on how you end the game Fall-From-Grace makes a comment about trying to find The Nameless One where ever he might be. That comment coupled with the fact that her biography/history wasn't as developed made me wonder if a sequel centered around her or "rescuing" the nameless one was considered.

Arcanum was way too complicated and difficult, EPSECIALLY for such a lacking experience. Dont know why it was so popular.

Planescape just didnt seem very special to me. Difficult to control. Story wasnt enthralling.

BG2 is still the best. NWN couldnt come close and it looks like no one wants to make anything better.
KOTOR 1 and 2 were good experiences, but still lacking in ways.

I tried Arcanum years after Planescape... because somebody said they liked it as much as Planescape... but i couldn't stand the graphics and the controls.

I didn't find Arcanum overly difficult at all, actually a bit too easy towards the end thanks to the slow time/haste spells.

Planescape has a great story with some of the most unique and well-written characters ever, but technically it is not a particularly challenging or complex RPG in terms of combat/stats. The characters and myriad of dialog choices are where it's at.

KoTOR 1 & 2 are not even remotely challenging as RPGs, but they have decent storylines.

The BG games all have the trite good vs. evil themes, quite boring, but are more challenging technically than the aforemetioned games.

Icewind Dale 1 & 2 are purely made for challenge and combat. Very high difficulty level.

NWN is really bland by my taste... nothing compelling either way.

ToEE had a nice look and was a good combat-based RPG, but was way too buggy and way too short.

Most of the people from Black Isle either went to form Troika (now defunct, the core of people primarily responsible for the Fallout series) or Obsidian (working under Bioware currently).

Speaking of NWN. There are some great player made module to be played that are actually just as good as the bioware original game IMO

Eye of the beholder playermod and a few other game remakes are pretty dang cool with the NWN graphic engine.

Nordrom the Mordron or whatever. He was so cool, haha. Awesome characters, awesome villains, awesome music, awesome quests. A+ game all around and they left an insane amount of room for a sequel. Honestly though, if I was on that dev team I'd be too scared of making the sequel, they've set their own bar so high.

Oh and about NWN, that engine aged terribly. There may be a ton of mods for the game but they all look absolutely terrible. I went back to NWN after playing Planescape and I enjoyed Planescape's 2D much more.

I enjoyed IWD 1 thoroughly, completed that one. IWD 2 i got tired of about half way through (i think). Tried Arcanum twice and just couldn't stand the control system.

BG1 i didn't like, BG2 i enjoyed but have attempted to complete it 3 times over the past 4 years and failed each time 😛

NWN i didn't enjoy much.

I'll have to get planescape torment at some point! That and complete IWD1 again except this time with HoW.

I don't think I can take playing BG2 again...the first 5-10hrs would be just too boring.

Another one worth mentioning is Greyhawk: temple of elemental evil.

It was kind of a letdown put I sure enjoyed the turn-based combat.

I enjoyed Arcanum the most out all the ones listed so far, just wish the multiplayer was vastly more developed.

Then PS over the BG series as I could never get myself interested in anything the characters were saying. Another game I found myself liking quite a bit was Divine Divinity...not sure why because if you step back and look at it, it wasn't that great of a game. Guess I just enjoyed the gameplay =]

PS suffered from running on the BG interface. Arcanum was rushed & most of the whole technology aspect was worthless compared to the other forms of combat. Fallout was better then its sequel, & even then, still felt incomplete. The Baldur's Gate series relied too much on combat & they cut out Minsc' quest in BGII. 🙁

I still miss them all. *sniff*

NWN looks good for a game that offers probably the best multiplayer D&D experience, tools, connectivity options. Mods are great. My biggest gripe with it are the controls.
