Train because I only have to pay $0.35 to go most important places and it gets there much quicker than traveling by car, not to mention I don't have to worry about maintenance. Rather unimportant, but going by train is more relaxing as well.

EDIT:

Cars are cheaper to go places than trains? LOL WUT.

Have you seen how expensive gas is and how much maintenance costs can add up?

Trains, every time. I grew up near Philly and lived in DC for 5 years, so between taking the metro to work and Amtrak to visit family/friends up the east coast, I can't think of a better way to travel.

I was pleasantly surprised by Amtrak Downeaster service from Maine to Boston, too. I have to go from here to there for work every couple of weeks. The Downeaster has a great selection of beers and is right off the business class car, which is usually only an $8 upgrade.

No kidding. I went to Toronto by train and it cost me around 200 bucks, and that counted the return as well. Would have cost me WAY more to drive, just in gas alone. I'd probably be looking at around 400 bucks in gas, then you have to pay for parking everywhere. In big cities like Toronto it's ridiculously expensive to park, too. If I lived in a big city I probably would not even bother owning a car, I'd just use public transit.

Cars, hate planes. Hate airlines, hate TSA's security theater, cars ftw.

^^This, by God. Thanks to knee-jerk reactionaries, the Terr'ists have already won (TSA, "security" policies, etc). Shame too, cause I love flying.

Would love to take a train on a distance run some day, but I got nowhere to go.

Everywhere I do go, though, I'll be going by car.

Yup. Pretty much everything in my country is centered around the metropolitan area, which is where I live. Because of that, we have a train and many buses to get us to almost all of the important areas. The train and bus system is completely integrated and they give you a discount for being a student, so I only have to pay $0.35 for each time I take the train or a bus. On a normal day, therefore, I spend $1.40-1.75 on transportation. Going by car that would be around $5 plus maintenance costs.

Flying is the best without a doubt, unless its a 4 or less hour train ride. Fuck driving. I don't have a car though so its inconsequential.

Trains.

Purely for the nostalgia and the "getting somewhere should be as much fun as being there" aspect. :)

I'd prefer trains if they weren't more expensive and 5-10x slower than planes.

For my family, the furthest we would typically go is from western NY to the Orlando, Florida area. I used to make the trip in about 17 hours, leaving around 6pm, and arriving in time for lunch. Yeah, I'd miss a night's sleep, but that's not really that big of a deal. In later years, my wife and I made longer trips - I'd rest until she was tired, then I'd drive while she slept, then she'd drive while I slept. Worst case, we spent 2 or 3 hours at a rest stop taking a nap.

But, for me, the closest airport would be roughly 2 hours by the time I parked and entered the terminal. Then, get there early for the security line. Have to minimize our luggage. Fly into Orlando. Have to pick up the luggage. Have to rent a car. Then have to drive about 35 minutes to our actual destination. For how much money?! Overall, it saves less than 10 hours. And, it saves the expense of renting a vehicle. 1100 miles roughly, 25 miles to the gallon - 44 gallons of gas. That's less than just one ticket, let alone tickets for 4. Plus, if I feel like taking a detour to do some sight seeing, I can (usually on the way back home.) And, believe me, for a family of 4, I had the vehicle completely packed. Chairs for the beach, ice chest with food, and for the beach, all sorts of crap like that. And, I'd bring back all sorts of stuff, like a case of oranges that I picked myself. The kids would always bring back a bunch of those stupid lizards that they caught. Car >>> flying with a family and kids.

My vehicle costs $.14 per mile to operate. Fuel, maintenance, all of it. No more payment. Insurance is $480 per year.

There is a regional airport ten miles away, but non stop service covers just a couple airports. SLC, PDX, SEA, maybe DEN. Driving to an intl airport is four hours; PDX, SEA, or BOI.

Driving, I can get to San Francisco, Las Vegas, Denver, Zion Natl. Park, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Aspen, Arches NP, or the Badlands all in about 15 hours or less. Doable by myself, and no trouble when the wife comes along. Car gets 27+ mpg at highway speeds. Fuel to any of these destinations would be less than 100 gallons, so $350.

1) Driving (under 1200 miles)
2) Train? (actually never taken the train as an adult)
3) Airplane (I seriously consider a trip that require airplane travel)

Super seriously.

Every town in my country has a train station (pretty much) there are about 10 internal flight airports.

Great Britain fits in the Great Lakes...

GB 229,848 km^2

Great Lakes 301347km^2

That might explain why there is a lot of air travel in North America vs rail travel.
