I wonder if the pilot was alright. Surely the 100+ people who rushed to crowd around his plane were able to save him.

Holy crap! I was at that game!!

That was in Anchorage, Alaska, in 2003, Mulcahy Stadium. The Anchorage Bucs were playing the Goldpanners. One of those people rushing to the plane is me!

edit: here's a link to the the Goldpanners' webpage response to the incident.

I was a fan. I was sitting behind home plate a few rows back. We saw the plane before the ump did (we being the collective group of fans)

Did the pilot make it out ok? What caused him to crash? airport nearby?

Yes, the pilot and three occupants were rattled but unharmed... all walked away. The cause of the crash was an engine failure. The plane was hoping to reach Merrill Field, which is located about two miles NE of that stadium, however there was not enough altitude to allow it to glide that far. The stadium is the only relatively open piece of land in the area so he elected to put 'er down there.

Just last week we had another small plane land on the highway just south of town. And a couple years ago one landed on the lagoon (frozen over... it was winter) and almost took out some ice skaters. That plane too was trying to get to Merrill Field with engine trouble but was flying too low to stretch it out.

What a moron he could have killed a ton of kids and people. I would have went for those trees or something in the back instead of aiming for fields full of kids and people. Even if it hurt more it's better than risking the lives of a bunch of other people.

And 'engine failure' more often than not means pilot error. As so with this case. Text
The engine did exactly what it's supposed to do. I hated flying planes without a dual feed fuel system and having to switch tanks. I'd never run entirely only one tank though like this guy did.

Another pilot had flown the accident airplane prior to the accident flight, and usually, when an airplane returned to the operator's base, line service personnel would routinely fill the right fuel tank, to be ready for the next flight. Prior to departing on the outbound leg of the flight, the pilot said that he did not visually check the fuel quantity in the right wing fuel tank, and that the entire round trip flight was flown with the fuel selector valve selected to the right fuel tank. When asked if he attempted to switch the fuel selector valve from the right fuel tank to the left tank, the accident pilot responded "no." During wreckage recovery efforts, and in the presence of the NTSB IIC, about 0.8 gallons of fuel was drained from the right wing-mounted fuel tank, and associated fuel lines. About 30 gallons of fuel were drained from the left wing-mounted fuel tank.

I wonder who taught these guys to fly from only the right side tank? I hope they yanked this guys license for good. The crash should have never happened, and he is lucky he did not kill any one on the ground.

I've never heard of anyone doing it. Crazy. If anything, it makes the plane harder to fly.

I think that is the same one as at the Alexis Park Inn Aviation site The Site.

If you like aviation video stuff, go there. I did some reformatting of videos in the Military section to convert some mpeg4 stuff to single wmvs.
