Pilot Error

After reading that the pilot, who survived, made an error which resulted in so many deaths, I started thinking about whether I would be able to live with the tremendous amount of guilt that I would feel if it were me.
I guess the question is, how much is too much ? and would you be able to live with it ?

I do believe i would have a very hard time dealing with that many deaths resulting in an error i might have made.
 
The fact is they never should have been trying to take off in that weather. I'm sure he couldn't see JACK, it was freaking typhoon for gawds sake. I'm sure he feels awful.

Weather conditions were horrible at the time and I'm sure played a significant part in this unfortunate disaster. Just because there were other take-offs and landings doesn't mean they should have in that type of weather.

This pilot will be replaying this event in his mind for the rest of his life.

Talk about you're living hell.

Frankly, I hope he has counseling available to him. I blame myself when my Monarch Butterfly caterpillars die, and I can't imagine having such a tragedy on my head.

My answer to your question is: How much is too much depends on the individual (in my case, I can be devastated by the smallest of personal failing) and I wouldn't be able to live with it. I'd need serious counseling, meds, a padded room, etc.

The lack of common sense is astounding sometimes. It was a TYPHOON and the whole system let those people down. It's not just the pilot. I had a flight scheduled earlier this year on an MD-80 during that emergency 48 hour inspection. I called TWA and they told me that they could not guarantee that I would fly an inspected plane. I was mortified. How could this be? So I decided not to fly. I felt the system was lacking I was not up to the stress of making several flights aboard these planes.

Still, the pilot will be hung for this.
 
Why wasn't the runway completely blocked off so that no plane could even get on it? Like barrels or something across it with flashing lights? Make them bright enough to see, but not bright enough to be confusing to landing aircraft. Seems that the airport coulda done a better job in marking that runway as closed, especially since bad weather was in the area.

The article doesn't say what kind of aircraft were grounded. Maybe smaller aircraft that would have been severly affected by the winds, instead of a giant 747 that would just experience some slight turbulence.

Part pilot's fault, part airport's fault, part airline's fault. It took a bunch of screw-ups to cause that accident.
 
TRP - I agree with your point, the unfortunate thing is that at the end of the day its BAU for the company but the pilot will not have that luxury.

Isla - that is my feeling also, I don't think I would be able to continue. 🙁

Psssst Isla, does that mean you dont ALREADY have a padded room ?? 😉
