**Plane Crash in Greece**

Analog

Lifer
A Cypriot plane carrying 121 people has crashed north of Athens after losing contact with air traffic controllers, Greek officials said. Authorities had sent two Greek F-16 jets to escort the Boeing 737 after the control tower at Athens international airport lost contact with the pilots, state media reported. One of the F-16 pilots reported he could not see the captain in the cockpit and that the co-pilot appeared to be slumped in his seat, a Greek Defense Ministry official told Reuters.

Zeus is gettin pretty bored with those thunderbolts. He needs to get back to throwing the damn things at Poseidon's pet dolphins.

Yes, I know lightning hits planes all the time with no effect.

edit: here's a news link to go with that thread title.

I bet you wouldn't make a remark like that if this was in the U.S

any ideas what happened?
sounds mechanical, the cabin lost pressure and both pilots lost consciousness.

A man whose cousin was a passenger on the plane told Greece's Alpha television he received a cell-phone text message minutes before the crash.

"He told me the pilots were unconscious. ... He said:

"Farewell, cousin, here we're frozen," Sotiris Voutas said.

Loss of cabin pressure means drastic temperature changes.

I thought cellphones didnt get reception that high up? I've tried switching on my cell before in flight, but it didnt get any reception.

I have a friend who was going to Greece today from Canada. I don't know what airline she was flying or if she made a stop off before going to Athens.

This is terrible, I have no idea if she was on that plane.

I can almost guarantee that she wasn't on it.

A plane coming from Canada would almost certainly not have landed in Cyprus before going onto Greece. Athens is a huge airport; there's no reason to land in Cyprus first.

Ok, that sounds right to me, I don't know why they wouldn't go directly there.

I don't understand how the cockpit would lose oxygen, don't they have oxygen masks?

I've been able to get reception in a plane before, so I'm sure it's possible. Just think of 9/11 with the plane that crashed into the ground, people made calls from that one IIRC.
