Officials said the twin-engine plane was on a flight from Daytona to Lakeland at about 8:30 a.m. when it crashed into the homes at the Preserve at Lake Monroe subdivision in Sanford.
"(The pilot) was coming in at a bank like he was trying to make a turn and he went straight down into the houses," a witness said at the scene.
Family Critically Burned
A woman, her husband and their 10-year-old son were burned and critically injured when the plane slammed into their home.
Witnesses told Local 6 News that the boy was on fire and running around.
A fire investigator with the Sanford Fire Department said the boy had burns over 80 to 90 percent of his body.
"The other four people who live next door, (at a home) which was also impacted by the plane crash, well, their whereabouts are unknown," Local 6's Laura Diaz said.
Local 6 reported that the family was likely away from the house when the plane crashed, but police did not confirm the report.
A 4-year-old boy remained unaccounted for, Local 6 reported.
Witnesses said the plane was trying to land at Orlando Sanford International Airport when it crashed about 1 mile north of the airport, Bergen said.
Plane Left NASCAR Hangar
The plane was registered to Competition Liaison Bureau Inc. of Daytona Beach. Local 6 said the company has connections to NASCAR.
Local 6's Tarik Minor said the plane took off from a NASCAR hangar.
Also, a Lake Mary firefighter was injured while trying to extinguish flames at the crash scene.
The neighborhood where the plane crashed was evacuated because of explosions.
