A group called "The Plain View Project" looked at social media posts and comments by more than 3,500 current and former police officers in eight jurisdictions throughout the US. Out of those 3500, over 800 were found to have blatantly racist and/or bigoted posts on their social media accounts.

Folks, that is nearly 30% of a random sampling of police in just 8 jurisdictions. And these are just the ones stupid enough to post racist shit on social media.

The Plain View Project have publicly posted the database complete with screen shots proving their findings.

I fully support GOOD cops. And I hope they do the right thing with these bad cops. Because when this news breaks to a larger audience, it's going to be bad... very very bad.

Before passing judgement I’d like to see examples of not just the most blatant of these but all the other ones on the other end of the spectrum. What gets thrown into the mix for bigoted posts for instance. There are lots of bad cops for sure and no doubt a lot of them are racists, probably more than 30%. But i can’t help but wonder what kind of stuff make up the post in these numbers.

I am not surprised at all. Probably 80% of all cops and the military fully back Donnie and eat up conspiracies like Uranium One.

I think the bigger driver is after working in the police force for a while and dealing with what they have to deal with it can have the effect of turning one prejudice. Consciously or subconsciously.

You could have clicked on the link to see every instance of the type of posts they considered racist or bigoted as pointed out in the quote in the OP.

I guess people only read headlines now a days.

Dealing with the "dregs of humanity" can certainly tend to "color" a person's attitude...

I know some cops. The number absolutely is higher because they constantly talk about CYA (cover your ass) to each other (and their departments talk to them about posting shit on social media). I guarantee you that if people saw the shit that cops say to each other in private, it'd put an end to any doubt that police have a serious racism problem.

Sounds like the general populace.

30% sounds about right for the Trump base among voters too, does it not?

I think the biggest driver is people like you that carry the water for these like minded racists which allows them to get away with this. Yes, the victim of institutional racism IS the racist cop. The n@&$#@# made them that way...

72 cops in Philadelphia were put on desk duty because of this study. These cops are not allowed to testify in any criminal cases. I'm assuming you are waiting for the white hoods to believe this story.

Sadly, fairly predictable -- yes, there are many good cops, but the job attracts a disproportionate number of people who, shall we say, fit a particular type of conservative. Authoritarian, socially frozen in time, believes anything and everything is justified when dealing with "those people" (read: non-whites).

There are times where I suspect the rate of excessive police force isn't higher solely because some of those hateful officers haven't been placed in a situation where they can abuse their power. Like they just haven't run into an Eric Garner they can choke or a Walter Scott they can shoot in the back.

I like the disclaimer where it said that cheery-picked posts were selected without context. Am I wrong? But I thought personal feelings didn't matter to people? That's what Dems tell us about people involved in the Russian collusion investigation.

Holy attempt to derail the thread, Batman.

The fact is that police officers shouldn't be holding bigoted ideas -- full stop. It doesn't matter how many of the samples you see on the website, that's unacceptable behavior for someone who's supposed to be serving all of the public.

There is no surprise that people whose minds see human interactions based on hierarchical position gravitate toward police work. And you can't have a hierarchy without dividing people into categories. And you need some criteria with which to do that. Of course the bad people will end up being the disadvantaged people.

Personally, I don't think this is inherently bad. We need cops to be able to quickly read situations and concretely categorize things and be able to separate their emotions from their work. I would be a terrible cop. But I think what's important is more flexibility within our cops. Not an inherent proclivity toward an empathic, dynamic, non-categorical point of view, but rather shifting toward this point of view when appropriate.

Based on my experience, I do think that police culture broadly supports that kind of interpersonal flexibility. I think this is because there are too many people in policing who use their hierarchical view and authoritarian position within it as a means to bolster a weak sense of self, and that's a shame. Those are the "bad" cops, even though what makes them "bad" is their own humanity. That is, of course, excluding people who abuse their authority for personal gain instead of supporting their own self esteem.
