Plagued by wifi issues

ISP: Centurylink
speed:40/5
Modem: actiontech c2000a

I have had service for the past year, and it's worked perfectly with a zyxel c1000z over ethernet and wifi. About a week ago, I started experiencing issues even streaming sd video over wifi. I ran a speed test, and found over wifi I was getting around 1mb/s download speeds although I'd get near 40 over ethernet. They sent out a new modem, an actiontec c1000a, I get that, and it works better, although I can't get anything faster than 10mb/s over Ethernet and wifi drops out and won't connect sporadically. Called tech support, they send a tech out he replaces the modem with this c2000a. Getting 35m over Ethernet, but now wifi drops are still here. Recently now the modem shows provisioned at 25m down, and wifi disconnects every few minutes. Could it be I've had 3 bad modem/routers in a row or could there be something on my end/devices causing the problems? I'm at my wits end. Don't want to use a separate router unless I have to.

^ Yup.

Have that POS replaced, or get it set in bridge mode, and get a well-reputed router to plug in after it.
