Plagiarism

Was thinking about some things and I remembered this happening and wanted to see what you guys thought. I took a history class in college and we had to write a paper on a historical figure regarding or subject chosen from a list the professor compiled. Mine was on Andrew Jackson in regards to something he was famous for. Can't quite remember what it was now, but it doesn't matter.

Anyway, so I wrote the paper, used parenthetical documentation and a works cited page for all the sources I used, or so I thought. After we handed our papers in, the following the professor came to class extremely pissed. He said nearly everyone in the class was a bunch of plagiarists, didn't cite their sources, were stealing other people?s ideas, etc. I was kind of shocked when he told me I was one. I asked him where I didn't cite a source, and he showed me the first paragraph of my essay where I gave a summary of where Jackson grew up, date of birth, where he went to school, there were a few other things but I can't remember them now. I told him I put the source I used for these basic facts in my works cited page and showed it to him. He said that it had to be parenthetically documented or footnoted or I was plagiarizing.

Now I'd been writing papers for 10 years documenting them the same way I had done this one without any complaints from a professor or teacher so I told him so, I even had a copy of the MLA handbook I used to refer to from time to time to make sure I was documenting an electronic or other source correctly. And suddenly this butthead is telling me he can have me thrown out of the school for my paper? As far as I understood inline documentation, you only need to document with a footnote or parenthetically if you are using an exact quote, or you are using an idea (even if rephrased) from another person. Factual information is public knowledge, date of birth, mothers name, etc. I didn't think you would need to cite this inline. So I wanted to get your thoughts, was the dude just friggin nuts? I think so since he said the whole class was plagiarizing. If it was one or two people, yeah maybe I could think I was screwing up. But everybody? I call BS!

Edit: Paragraphs added cry babies
Edit: Spelling corrected, grammar revised, anal retention engaged!

1. paragraphs. they are your friend.

2. your professor sounds like a bitch. it's not like you made no attempt to cite your sources.

One of my least favorite things about writing a research paper or the like, was conforming to the MLA crap for documentation.

plagarism = using other peoples works without citing them NOT using other peoples works and not citing them EXACTLY the way a prof wants them cited.

he's a moron.

he can dock you for not following his instructions, but he is stupid if he thinks NOT citing EXACTLY/PRECISELY as he wants them cited makes it plagarism.

yeah, i would watch cuz if he really thinks it plagerism, he could go to the dean, happened to a buddy of mine, almost got kicked out of school

You should get an F for not using paragraphs not for plagiarism.

Citing a source for basic facts about a person that are probably mentioned in the first paragraph of everything written about him is asinine...

Yeah, I could see if I hadn't cited it at all, but I did have the source on the works cited page and I showed him that, but he was just being pissy. Here's another question, when it comes to factual knowledge like that, what if it's something you already know? Something you learned when you were watching Jeopardy 2 years ago, or something you learned in elementary school? So and so was born on .... you can't document common knowledge. This is where the biggest whole in the professors complaint comes in. How does he know what I do or don't know when it comes to factual knowledge. He doesn't. Maybe I was an Andrew Jackson buff and know all this stuff already. Why should I have to go find a book with the information in it and cite that if it's not something I need to reference? Bah! I'm getting all mad about this again and it happened to me a while ago. Just wanted to see if I was crazy. I guess my sanity is intact.

rule of thumb is if it can be obtained from a number different sources or an encyclopedia than that information belongs to the public domain

Yeah that's what I thought. I should have dragged him to one of the English professors to be chastised for being an idiot. I mean wow, how fat does your head have to be to think that a room fool of college students doesn't know how to document a source? I think that if it were me, and my entire class had done something that way, I'd start thinking maybe I was wrong in my understanding of the procedure. Thanks for the input, I can calm down now.

first off, its "write," not "right."
second, paragraphs please. I had to highlight each line with mouse so that i dont lose my place.
third, you havent done anything wrong. you only need to cite opinions as they are not yours and generally you need to copy them word for word from said text. Basic facts doesnt have to be parenthetically cited (unless you are copying word for word from a text)

i think the whole 'works cited' bs is annoying as hell. i'm glad i only took 2 english classes in college. i think it's just stupid that if you do something a little bit wrong that you can lose alot of points, just for not being %100 accurate w/the MLA rules. as long as it looks not too messy, it should be fine. the whole bibliography is stupid as sh!t imo also. who cares who published the friggin book?

bah, my rant is over ... but thats just another reason I hate doing papers for school.
