I am placing my order at newegg as we speak
I wanted to get more than just the cpu and keep it around 400 bucks
here are the prices of stuff i am looking at:

*2400+ $200
slk-800 heatsink $45
artic silver 3 $6
extra fan for a few dollars

Asus GF4 ti4200 128mb $165
Asus GF4 ti4200 128mb delux (micro bga mem) $230
Albatron GF4 ti4200 128mb (micro bga mem) $185

Antec True power 430 $78
Antec True power 480 (with blue led) $95
Antec True power 550 $110

I am getting the 2400+ for sure but the other items are on a budget around 200 bucks

i currently have a system with a voodoo5, a cheap aluminum hsf, and a cheesy 300 watt psu

this system is being built to play Unreal Tournament and UT2003

which items do you think i should get ?
pass on the video card for now maybe ?
any comments on albatron ?
Any comments on other stuff ??
what would you get ??

Power supply seems like a biggie to me. You can play UT2003 at reduced detail levels and still smaX0r people about until you've got some budget free for a video card. :D

On the flip side, if you want UT2003 performance, I'm pretty darn sure that a Radeon 9700 and a 1600+ would beat a Voodoo5 with ANY CPU, when it comes to actual UT2003 game performance.

edit: also consider the Thermalright SK-7, it got some darn good results at Overclockers.com, almost matching the SLK-800 using an equivalent fan. And it's about $16 cheaper.

Which one of those video cards would you guys choose ??

if i get the cheapest asus one it comes with the slower non-bga mem
how much do you think that will affect overclocking ??

maybe i should just not worry about oc'n my video card
the only reason i would want the delux is because of the micro bga memory on it

the albatron card has some good cooling on it
but the board is huge (just like the asus delux)
looks like the same board my voodoo5 is on

thanks for the input so far

I got some Enermax adjustables for my sister's case, they seem to be good. Haven't gotten around to using a YSTech, so I don't know which is best, but I do like looks of the adjuster knob on the YSTech better.

for fans. Get a good panaflo. Adjustable fans are for people who can't make decisions.
If you buy that processor and that videocard your power supply is going to explode. Buy a good power supply.

hahahaha
yeah this psu couldn't handle my 1ghz at 1.3
with this old motherboard tho i'll only be running the proc at 1.5ghz and have it undervolted
till i mess with those L10 bridges or whatever and trick it into getting higher clock mults
I'm having fun with this old kt133 board
i don't mind 100mhz fsb it don't hurt my seti times and games are still good
that's pretty much all i do

the reason i wanna get rid of my voodoo5 card is cause it can't play UT2003 in Linux (which is the only os i run)
all nvidia cards can tho cause they got their closed source drivers and thus have access to VIA's s3tc patent

so if i don't get a new vid card i won't be playing UT2003 (but can still play the original UT)

I can play UT2003 Demo on an 8Mb nVidia TNT2-Vanta, and according to my friends I am still rather dangerous. Their flying gibs aren't quite as pretty on the Vanta, of course :D and I use my GeForce2 GTS-V lately. Those are under $50, if you wanted an interim solution, and if you can't frag with that... then you just can't frag. ;)

Hmmm an antec True power 480 should do everything i'll need
you think it would be able to handle a dual athlon system (hammer) in the future ??
i like the 480 cause it comes with the blue led fan in the psu and would look cool in my case
i could get the 550 and buy the fan separate....

yeah Pink0 i've heard those panaflo fans are good

i just read Tom's psu roundup
he reviewed an antec 380 and it kicked some good butt

mechBgon hahaha yeah i used to have a GF2 gts till i fryed it
kinda wanna try something new that will last me
i was waiting for some NV28 boards to come out
cause they would prob have the micro bga memory and agp 8x (not big deal yet) and even if i didn't get one of those when they came out atleast prices would drop on other stuff but i hate waiting
this system has been down since last year and i'm getting sick of this laptop with it's broken cdrom drive
just add that to the pile of broken stuff:
1ghz athlon tb
athlonxp 1700+
80gb maxtor drive
and some other junk..

the game is really cpu dependent tho

heh yeah barton will rock
i can only imagine the seti times with that cache on an athlon

hopefully newegg don't run out of these 2400+'s before i place my order
that would suck

Just trying to save you some$. I bought this 2400 about 1 hour ago. I was going to buy the 2200 but 2400 is ponly $ 42 more. Thought the 220 would have gone down more. :) Good luck on your new build! Cya
