Placing a hard drive in system that was used as main drive in another system

So what would be the best way to do install this drive in my buddys system. I know the used drive needs to be formatted, but what is the best way does this require a new install of windows? I know that we will need to change bios settings. Anyway thanks for any help you can offer.

what size drive, what OS? give us a few more details, whats the drive going to be used for? main drive or storage drive?

If the drive is PATA, hook it up to an IDE channel as Master or Slave by setting the jumpers correctly on the drive. Just make sure the channel in the BIOS is set to Auto, to detect the drive.

You wont need to reinstall Windows if you're just adding a drive to an existing rig - you do need to make sure the boot order has the existing drive with the OS set to boot first.

If the drive is an SATA drive, all you need to do is hook it up to a SATA channel and then make sure the boot order is set correctly.

Once you ge this done, go to Disk Management (Control Panel->Administrative Tools-> Computer Management ->Disk Management if you want to format/partition it.

The new drive is being salvaged from another system it is 30 gigabyte and I believe it is ide. The system it is going in is running microsoft windows xp professional. This is all my friend gave me for details, I can ask him other questions if need be. Thanks for the tips!!
