Places to visit/ eat in San Diego?

My wife and I are going to San Diego for the first time tomorrow, and I want to know what places I should check out.

For now, I wanna go to the beach (don't know which one) and go to Phil's BBQ.

Is there any other places or restaurant recommendations?

For how long, and where are you staying?
The beach was cloudy all day today, but may clear a little tomorrow.
La Jolla Cove - walking around there, and lots of restaurants too.
Downtown / Gaslamp quarter is awesome. Tons of bars and restaurants.
Seaport Village - downtown on the bay is nice, kinda touristy.
Midway Aircraft Carrier museum - Very cool, down a mile from Seaport Village
Cruise around the bay. all the charters are around down by the Midway.
And of course the Zoo / Sea World / LegoLand.
Old Town is great for some Mexican culture and great mex food.

Old Town is a great place to stop if you are passing through SD. Lots of restaurants and shops all next to each other. You can drive through Old Town, you park and walk in.

In n Out if you've never been there

I don't quite get the hype though. Maybe it's because I've lived in the San Diego area for most of my life.

In n Out definitely isn't bad especially for the price it costs.

The restaurants in Old Town State Park suck. There are some nice mexican places that are near by though. Cafe Coyote, Fred's, Miguel's, Old Town Mexican Cafe.
If you are looking for fine dining and have a bit of cash to spare Croce's is an awesome (if a bit crowded) place to eat.
If you are looking for a bit of a different bar experience I highly recommend the Shout House dueling piano bar. (Warning: This place can be a bit raunchy, but is great fun if your wife can get in to it.)

Bubble teas and Chinese food @ 99ranch. We were there last month for 3 nights and we drive from nearby seaworld to 99ranch. Like there's no other Chinese food. Lol.

Broken Yolk and/or Hash house

The Broken Yolk really went downhill, IMHO. I go out to Carlsbad for a week every summer and we went twice that week, terrible service and average food both times. It's a shame because it was the family breakfast spot almost every day the previous year.

WTH? 99 Ranch is pretty crappy. Convoy St. in Kearny Mesa has a number of Chinese restaurants that are pretty good.

Interesting.... I went there once this summer and thought WTF is everyone raving about. You pay twice as much and wait in line for food from Denny's.

For "postcard" beaches, go to Coronado or La Jolla. For a kiddie's beach, go to Mission. For nudie, go to Black's Beach. :c)

It's still serviceable, it's just not great anymore. Do yourself a favor and get an omelette, don't get the biscuit with it (they're terrible). Also, the breakfast burrito is a big NO.

The problem with Broken Yolk is that SD has way better breakfast places. If you can swing by Hash House it's a pretty amazing place to go for breakfast, but it's pricey and will cost you.

If you're in north county (north of La Jolla), in Carlsbad there is a place called Tip Top Meats. A bit of a long wait to get to the cashier, but their Big John's Breakfast is three eggs, hashbrowns, toast, and all you can eat meat (selection of bacon, brats, polish, link sausage, and ham).

El Norte on the other hand is good.

There are a ton of restaurants in north county along the coast. A few of my favorites are Trattoria Trulli in Encinitas, 333 Pacific in Oceanside, and Vigiluci's in Carlsbad. These are all north county though so if the OP is staying in downtown it doesn't do him much good.

Jake's in Delmar is always a favorite and you can't beat the fish tacos on the bar menu at the Brigantine.

Funny thing is that I just got back today from 10 days in San Diego.

Bubble teas and Chinese food @ 99ranch.

Go to Sam Woo BBQ at 7330 Clairemont Mesa Blvd #103. It is the place in the back of 99 Ranch Market (market is bulk of building, other side has a few stores), with the hanging roasted ducks. That place has the BEST boba milk tea. They have various flavors, but their original boba milk tea is the best. That place also has pretty tasty and cheap Chinese takeout. For take out I always custom order the beef tendon dish. It isn't in their normal takeout selection.

Rubio's is always good. They are Baja style fresh Mex specializing in battered fish tacos and burritos. It's a regional chain that started in San Diego, and they have restaurants here and there.

If you like Pho, my favorite place is called Pho Hua on 4717 El Cajon Blvd. I always get their #1 bowl and a Thai tea, and squirt liberal amounts of Sriracha sauce into the bowl.

There's an Asian take out place on 6935 Linda Vista Rd (I think) that specializes in dim sum style dishes. Not the best dim sum in the world, but still tasty and really cheap. It is attached to the Thuan Phat supermarket.

If you want really good dim sum, try Emerald Seafood Restaurant. It is on 3709 Convoy Street.

For an Asian buffet, try the Super Buffet (whatever it is called, name has changed several times) at 8998 Miramar Road. Very tasty of course, and very extensive. They often have stuff like crab legs. I've even seen frog legs there! They have sushi and sashimi, as well as Mongolian BBQ.

If you want an adventure, head East on Interstate 8 for 2 hours until you get to El Centro, and eat at Celia's Restaurant on 1530 Adams Avenue. Get the special quesadilla. It is a raw tortilla filled with queso and deep fried until it puffs up golden and crispy. Supposedly these deep fried quesadillas are a local invention. Their chips are really good and unique, and their salsa is really spicy. I always get their chorizo tostada - my favorite chorizo in the world. Their tacos are also good.

Talking about ducks, here's a pic at 99 ranch as I waited in line.

Well when I lived out there and played tour guide for all the friends and relatives, all my visitors or most visitors insisted on Sea Port Village for shopping, Balboa park for strolling around, chicken pot pie shop for at least one meal/lunch (in north park section of san diego), and for the beach... Blacks Beach was a must!
Blacks beach to see the hang gliders, and if you have the courage, climb down the cliffs to the nude beach below.
If I were there now, I'd take a short trip up to Jillian. I think that are having their apple-fest celebration about now.
WELCOME TO JULIAN, this premier mountain getaway, just an hour east of San Diego, in the beautiful Cuyamaca mountains. Take a step back in time to the days of Julian’s beginning rooted in the 1870s gold rush. Get away from the hectic rush of city life . . . discover the charms of Julian.

See where gold was discovered . . . . Shop in stores housed in historic buildings . . . some dating back to the 1870s . . . . Sleep in a romantic B&B or historic hotel . . . . Sample Julian's famous apple pies . . . . Hike and picnic amid oaks and pines . . . . Ride down Main Street in a horse-drawn carriage. Enjoy!

I would agree as an occasional tourist. I'm no authority.

I've been to Tip Top Meats. My inlaws live a few blocks from there up Camino De Las Ondas. Great market. We also used it to supply a family BBQ. Good stuff.

Haven't been to Hash House yet, will have to try it this summer.

Had my engagement dinner at Vigilucci's and I get back there once a year. Good food, get treated pretty well, but on any given visit, I'm the only Italian-speaking customer.

The Brigantine was excellent. Had the fish tacos, would return.

For breakfast, I'd throw Senor Grubby's in Carlsbad Village into the mix. Good for lunch too, but they do breakfast surprisingly well. That's if you can avoid going to Super Donut across the street. I dream about those donuts.
