Places to exchange currency?

Bank or currency exchange. Call first to make sure they can do it.
Into Euro's.....I feel bad for you. The dollar sucks right now.

most international airports have currency exchange places. Thomas Cook is one of the main businesses that deal in it.

I usually dont carry too much cash, travellers checks and credit card work way better and safer

Unless you absolutely have to have it before leaving the US, better to get it local. Otherewise you'll take an exchange rate hit when converting it.

Yep. Any bank should be able to do it (although if it's not a major branch in a big city they may need to order currency from elsewhere, so ask at least a week before you're leaving.) Any international airport or touristy place in Europe will have money exchange facilities, but you'll pay fees and the rates aren't always the best.

If you don't need "cash", using a credit card usually gets you a favorable exchange rate. Though you might want to check to make sure your particular card company won't gouge you.

check the exchange rate on your debit card as well, my bank thankfully offers free atm usage(they refund other banks fees and don't charge their own) and the mastercard atm card has a 1% conversion fee. Much better than you could get at a currency exchange.

Ok, thanks for the suggestions. I guess im going to wait till i get to Germany since i have layover before i go to Italy.

I'm in the same boat as you...

Leaving for France on Monday and I'd like to have maybe $100 in euros before I get there. Does AAA do it? And do they offer a decent exchange rate? The booth at the airport takes a huge chunk...

Many times in Europe you get a better exchange rate at ATM's than some Banks. I have also used American Express offices in the past.

Don't use the booth, use the ATM at the airport.

The only problem with ATMs is that some US banks will charge you several dollars for every international ATM transaction (and some foreign banks will charge you for accessing their network as well). Of course, for a big enough transaction that might still be cheaper than a standalone exchange office. If your bank doesn't charge extra fees for international access it might be a worthwhile option.
