Places to eat in Columbia, SC

I recently moved to Columbia, SC and I can't find a good place to get a cheeseburger, fries, and a malt and it's kinda starting to piss me off. Anyone from or living in this area that could recommend a place to grab a good burger and malt?

Going to USC. The university is great, I enjoy the weather, verdict is still out on the city/town though. Maybe if I can find a place to get some decent chow I'll like it more.

And to clarify to anyone else who might read this, I'm not talking Wendys/Mcdonalds/Hardees/Sonic, that is all ******. I'm talking about someplace with like Viena Beef products and a greasey stove with a short order cook spraying fire and grease in every direction.

My friend is the short order cook at cafe studle on State St. He was saying last night that he makes the best stuffed burgers. I am not sure what a stuffed burger is, but maybe it is what you are looking for.

State st is just over the gervais st bridge on the left after you enter west columbia.

Taco Bell. The Nacho's Bell Grande with steak is the best. (Very authentic, kinda food that the spanish ate back in the 1600's)

No, it is the armpit of the state.

As for your desire to find a good burger. Look up the Beacon drive-in locaed in Spartanburg, SC. Yeah it is a 1.5 hour drive but it is worth it.

Best greasy burger you will ever have.

GO TIGERS!!!

As far as I can tell so far, there is nothing really *wrong* with it. On the other hand it hasn't really proved to have any particularly redeeming or outstanding qualities.

USC is pretty damn nice though.

I'll check it out next time I'm through Spartanburg, which could be a long time.

Edit: It won't be the best greasy burger I've ever had. That title resides in the hands of Uncle Frankys (www.unclefrankys.com) in Minneapolis, MN.

Dang, I was just in Columbia a couple weeks ago and had a damn fine burger, don't remember the restaurant though, I was on a trip with a friend.

BTW You're only bout ~75ish miles away from Augusta, and we have some damn fine restaurants here-

I'll second that. Columbia does, indeed, suck 🙂 My parents live there and it was my permanent residence the last five years while I was in school and job hunting after graduation.

I don't know much about the restaurants specific to the area. I know there's a place called California Dreamin' that was pretty good. I've only been there once, though, and it's actually quite close to the campus. It's just down the hill a bit from the Strom Thurmond fitness center, right off Assembly, I think. There's a new dorm (as of last year, I think) right there, as well, but I can't remember what it's called - my brother is in it, that's all I know. I assume they have burgers and the like there, though.

And GO TIGERS!!! 😛

Edit: Just saw the bit about the short order cook. California Dreamin' isn't that kind of place. It's a sit-down restaurant, but it may still work out. If I remember, I'll ask my brother if he knows of any places.

I ate at California dreaming and it was a nice place, but nothing particularly special considering the price (which wasn't bad, it just wasn't cheap). I basically want to find an awesome hamburger shack that I can wheel up to, head to the counter, order up a greasy, delicious burger, fries, and malt.

Stay away from the Beacon at all costs. Crappy food. Ricky's is much better for a greaseburger. They do have some of the sweetest tea in the state, though.

California Dreaming next to the Engineering building is a ripoff if you are looking for a burger. Good food though.

Rush's is probably your best bet on the cheap. If I remember correctly, head to the Vista and keep heading down the road towards West Columbia. It's on the right. There is a Gooney Bird's out that way which is also pretty good.

FYI: Tigers suck

I'm not from Columbia but I know the route names. You can take Rt. 378 west out of downtown, through West Columbia, into Lexington. Rush's is at the intersection where US 1 merges onto 378. Look for it on the right (they have a huge sign) just after you pass the Sonic and the Mickey D's both of which are on the left.

You are from Spartanburg and completely crazy about the Beacon. It isn't as good as it used to be but it is still great.

Ricky's is good but I think Sugar and Spice is better than Ricky's.

The Beacon is overrated, that's all. But I don't think I've ever been impressed by the food.

Sugar and Spice is great. There is also a greasy burger joint on the same block as Sugar and Spice that's pretty good. It's in the strip mall next to the drugstore on the corner of Main and Pine.
