The food court in the mall I work in is just about all cash only. Only 2 places take credit. This is an all Asian mall so that explains why but I still find it annoying. I'd eat at a number of the places here if they took credit, very good Hinan Chicken at one place.

Cash only = tax evasion. Everyone knows this!

Lol I wouldn't be at all surprised. However I'm sure some of these establishments also just don't want to pay the banking fees for taking small credit transactions.

wat? I work in Richmond Vancouver, B.C. Basically this part of the city is like a 2nd Chinatown. We have a very large immigrant Chinese populations. I'm 1/2 Chinese myself.

Yep, and so I don't shop at such places. I go buy my 50-cent pack of gum with my credit card somewhere else.

Costco's debit/amex is pretty annoying. I've walked in there several times before remembering I didn't bring a way to pay for my stuff because they don't take visa/mastercard credit.

Just get the costco credit, then you only need to bring you costco card which you have to bring anyways.

I love cash only food places, it keeps the snobby "I only use CC and never carry even a dollar of cash!" people out. Which means I get my food faster, nothing lamer than a dude buying $3 worth of tacos and you having to wait while the machine processes his card and then wait more as he signs the receipt. I understand big places like Target have lightning fast processing, but a lot of mom and pop places don't. A liquor store I use to work at is still on dial up for the CC terminal.

I rarely have to sign credit receipts unless they're over $50. I find it just as fast (or faster) than cash transactions. Especially if the establishment uses blink transactions, where the receipt literally prints the instant the card is scanned. Must be where I live I guess.

the margins these places run on are generally pretty small anyway, so the CC only takes away from that. Is this crystal mall?

yeah while it's annoying I can understand. the food at these places is just unbelievably cheap for what you get. I think I could be troubled to bring cash for those places. but damn I hate dealing with loose change.

Of course its tax evasion. When you dont have to give half your money to the government you can charge less.

Then you claim that your business is losing money and get all sorts of government goodies.

I've been wanting an Amex for a while now but apparently they don't want me.

I applied for an Amex Blue Cash a few years ago and was denied, I was also denied for the Costco Amex last year when signing up for my Costco membership.

I have 700+ credit and no major blemishes on my credit report except for short history (5 years). I thought that would be good enough but I guess I'll have to wait.

The only time I've used plastic and it was slower than using cash was when the Internet happened to go out right before my transaction.

Just a point of reference on those margins and why some places will be cash only. There's usually a $0.25-0.50 transaction fee for each purchase. On top of that, there's a percentage fee. Big businesses can qualify for a nice merchant account and will only be hit for 1-5%. If you're not big enough or well established enough, you'll have to go through a third party to take credit cards and that 1-5% can triple.

So for that hole in the wall food place to take credit cards, that five dollar lunch you want to charge, they might only get $3.75. And that doesn't take into account the machines and upkeep. Would you rather have a cash only $5 lunch, or that same lunch that costs $7 that you can charge?

Exactly. Though, I usually go to these places, place an order, then try to pay with CC (no cash on me usually). If they don't take the CC, I suggest that they should start accepting that for situations just like this, and then I walk out.
