I have to move next month and need boxes to pack in. Where is a good place to pick up boxes? Either free or extremely cheap.

You can often get a bunch free from grocery stores. Try asking a manager or customer service if you can have some.

Grocery store boxes are ok..but can have cockroaches. Depending on how many you need...just go to U-Haul or any moving place and buy them. That way you know they are clean.

Grocery stores do have them but they're often somewhat small and may not have tops on them...

I just moved 2 weeks ago and checked a few local printing/screenprinting shops - they get TONS of paper in to make posters, folders, letterhead, etc and had dumpsters full of large, clean boxes. In addition, they had lots of boxes that packages of printer/copier paper comes in with the tops that lift off, which was nice for smaller things - they're all the same size and stack nicely.

^-- Usually your best bet. If you're desperate, U-Haul sells boxes, but they're not entirely cheap. They are, however, extremely durable and will probably last through a half dozen relocations with you.

Go to U-Haul. Unfortunately, depending on how big and how many boxes you want, you may have to pay a bit more than you wanted.

Alternately, if you work in an office or something, see if they have any empty boxes laying around that they want to get rid of. When we moved last year, my wife got tons of empty Dell boxes and paper boxes from her office when they replaced the computers in her department.

Also you could try finding a business park and look for the dumpsters behind the buildings. They may have a lot of empty boxes laying by the dumpster or in a dumpster set aside for that purpose.

Both of these options have worked great for me in the past. You'd be amazed how many boxes you can stockpile (assuming you have enough advanced notice) by taking just a box or two a day home with you. Any office in the country probably has LOADS of paper boxes and computer equipment boxes laying around. And business parks/warehouse areas are great for larger boxes.

I find that the BEST boxes are old USPS Priority mail boxes (the 12x12x12 size). I have a TON laying around (I order them to ship stuff for trades in FS/T and you get 25 at a time), plus they fit perfectly in my car trunk. They're pretty sturdy too, the current set I have now has lasted several moves.

Those free boxes are good for other stuff too. The cats LOVE them.
