I don't have the time and tools to build a box right now. I just need to buy a sealed box for a single 12" sub. Just looking for something at least halfway decent, 3/4" MDF, and sealed well. Just about 1 cubic foot will be good. Any suggestions on where to buy?

Do you have the ability to glue stuff together with precut parts or want a completely assembled box?

Just hit up your local car-audio shop. They should have premade boxes for under $50.

If you have a flea market - sellers have them there. The worse part of town the cheaper the box - all the same boxes though. Cheapest should be about $30.

If you want something really nice - Crutchfield.

As a side note, you can always try pawn shops, and if its not properly sealed, you can put silicon around the edges and seal up anything.

At 1cf, I'm assuming you're looking for a sealed box?

Pretty much any of the above suggestions. They're on eBay in the $25-40 range with shipping. You're unlikely to have any issues, although I'm sure they're all assembled with a nail gun (I prefer screws). But as long as they used some decent glue (that's what really holds the box together), it'll be fine. The pluses of prefabs are the relatively perfect cuts on the mass-produced panels, so it's hard to fuck it up.

Only advice is that you probably wanna ditch their terminals. Big hole with cheap plastic over it...unscrew them and chuck 'em in the trash, then seal the hole. Replace with binding posts that only require two small holes be drilled. I've used these before; super simple:

Actually I would be fine with that. If I could find a good quality flat pack with pre cut wood I would be fine assembling it and covering it.

Place to buy decent 12" sub box?

The 90's

...because car audio has evolved beyond the need for subwoofers?

A single 12" sub in a properly sized sealed box is a perfect complement for a good set of front components.

If you're saying what I think you are, though...hey, enjoy your Bose stereo in your new car, I'm sure it sounds great and was well worth the $1500 option.

i took it more as the new stuff today is thinner a lighter.... which still sounds good but its a more hollow, shittier sound. back in the 90's we ONLY used high density MDF at 3/4" minimum :D things weighed 400lbs but gas was 99 cents so who cares.

I bought this a few weeks back.

It looks much, MUCH -- MUUUUCH nicer in person, with a super black carpeting around it. I paid $25 from another seller at Amazon.

I am dying for warmer weather so I can stick it in my car. The amp on the side wasn't hitting hard enough with ~240w (although I was testing with a cheap computer power supply) so I just bought this to complement it. And when I say not hitting hard enough, the amp I had it on, running off a 12v line off a cheap Antec Earthwatts was shaking everything in my living room. It's just not enough for the car though. :D

I am using this sub wired at 2 Ohm.

Prices have jumped since I bought this stuff. I paid $25 for the box, $79 for the sub, and $114 for the amp. :(

I guess springtime is coming so people are spending money.
