Pizza Hut, the world's largest pizza chain, is offering customers the chance to buy a medium pizza with one topping for $5 as long they buy at least one other item such as breadsticks, soft drinks, wings or a second pizza also for $5.

Papa John's is offering customers who buy a large pizza at regular price the chance to buy a second for only 50 cents. (meh )

Pizza Hut's medium pizza is 12" (114in^2) and large is 14" (153.) From what I read Papa John's reduced their medium and large to 11" and 13" respectively. The normal size pizza at most pizzerias is 16" (201.)

So $5 for a Pizza Hut or Papa John's medium is probably all its worth within a dollar when compared to pizzerias using quality ingredients. Most of these chain restaurants use cheap wood pulp to add volume to their dough and cheese.

My reference was a thread where people were measuring their PJ pizzas and they had shrunk by .75-1 inch in diameter. Everything seems to be shrinking in this economy. I've never personally eaten one much less measured one. Papa John's xtra-large is in fact 16." That was my first and last time trying their pizza, out of necessity.

Unfortunately for good pizza, you don't pay just a little more, it's a lot more. You can get a large pizza at Pizza Hut with everything on it for $11, a large pizza with everything on it from my local pizza joint is $21. Of course the pizza is better but that's a huge difference.

I think I paid like $18 for this single serving pizza.

There should always be a hierarchy for pizza. Not all chains are a like.

I still prefer the higher end local pizzerias, but I do like Pizza Hut.

Do specialty restaurants use cherry or mahogany? Is that why they use wood fired ovens? I know Kraft Parmesan has cellulose to prevent caking.

NYC has tons of great pizza places in my area. They will even take you in stockroom to show their ingredients. Based on a sampling of two closest to my home...

16" Large Regular Pie $13.50
16" Large Regular Pie $14.45
16" Papa John's Regular Pie $15.99
14" Pizza Hut Regular Pie $13.99 (they don't sell a 16" pie)
14" Dominos Regular Pie $12.99 (they don't sell a 16" pie)

At least in my area, I cannot see how anyone would frequent these chains.


You can also make your own pizza, btw. It's not that difficult as you get practice. The hardest part is getting the dough right.

They use inert insoluble food-grade carboxymethyl cellulose and/or microcrystalline cellulose. You can find bags of them being sold at most food distributors.

I'm not like the typical atot food snob and can eat and enjoy cheap food but I had some Cici's takeout the other day, straight garbage and probably the worst pizza I have ever had

Nope, 2 14" pizza from Little Caesars at the same price is a far better deal. Both pizzas suck big time, but I'd give the nod to LC simply because they don't have astronomically large lines that take forever. I can be in and out of a LC and have consumed 4 slices in the time I'd be waiting in line just to order at Costco. The Pizza Hut deal's also better, and while it's not great pizza it smashes Costco. Especially if you get the Pretzel crust imho.
