Pizza: chain or small Italian place?

College alerted me of the culture shock that many people not only get their pizzas regularly from chains (Papa John's, Pizza Hut, Domino's etc.), they don't even have any local Italian pizzarias. You know, where the owner's name is the name of the place, his name ends in a vowel, and he (and a couple other guys) make every pizza from scratch wearing white undershirts, blue jeans and white aprons.

I'm from the NY area and there are a couple chain pizza places here and there, but it's mostly real places that make real pizza. At college, it's only Domino's or Papa John's in the entire city.

Just wondering how many ATOTers are deprived of real pizza.

The owners of my local so-called "Italian" pizzerias are either Latin or white that don't know crap about real Italian food. But they are better then and other place. *shrugs shoulders*

It depends. When I just want easy and quick I'll order from a chain. If I want good, I'll go to a local place (there are several I enjoy).

Best local place is named "Italian Town", but the guys who own/work there are mideastern - iranian or afghan or something. They make the best authentic italian pizza, though.
