Pixel Doubling on an LCD?

How do I enable pixel doubling on an LCD?

In other words, if I run my LCD at exactly half its native resolution, how do I force it to use 2 pixels for 1 instead of complicated interpolation algorithms, to make the image look crisper?

For example, if I want to run my 1440x900 laptop display at 720x450 when playing newer games. When I do this, it looks blurred, so my display's obviously interpolating. If I can get it to pixel double, it will look a lot crisper.

Or, if I get rich and buy a 2560x1600 monitor, and want to run newer games at 1280x800. I heard there's a way to force it to use 2 pixels for 1 instead of using blurry interpolation, when the resolution used is exactly half the native.

Does anyone know how to do this?

there was topic about this

some monitors have good hardware interpolation that supports 1/2 resolution as native one
most don't so they interpolate everything but native, i.e. blurry look you are getting

also it won't work with VGA

dell 3007 is one example of monitor that does 1/2 as native

Sorry, I tried searching a lot and couldn't find any conclusive answers to my question through Google or forum search.

So you're saying it depends on the monitor and cable type used, and doesn't depend on OS and graphics card, right? How do I find out which monitors support 1/2 resolution as native, then? Is there some comprehensive guide or reference as to which models support it and which don't?

it depends on graphics, but most have ability to use 'monitor scaling'

probably there's no guide, just trial and error.

maybe more people will respond.

here's old thread

technically you'd be using 4 pixels for one (2X2). But I see your point. I've been looking for the same thing for a while now, with little results. I ended up swallowing hard and dishing out for more powerful hardware, which alleviated (at least temporarily) the need to run things a lower-than-native resolutions.
