Hi,

I was reading through some threads about VPN and a lot of people suggested the cisco PIX. I currently have a cisco pix 501 setup and I was wondering does this mean that the PIX is capable of setting up the VPN? I'm curently looking for a good software solution, but if the PIX could setup the VPN that'd be great. Would I just need the Cisco VPN client and be able to connect to the PIX VPN server? Thanks.

If you have a relatively recent (~1 year or so .... version 6.X) version of IOS, you can do VPNs.

Do you know if you have DES or 3DES keys installed?

The easiest way would be to bring up PDM by browsing to the pix. You must use https:// (note the "s"). Cisco has a wizard for VPN creation, for either Cisco client or L2TP/PPTP (used by Microsoft).

Good Luck

I will have to play around with it when I go back to the office. Should of turned on the remote management. Hopefully I will be able to figure it out. Thanks.

The PIX was bought about 5 months ago so it should be a newer one, I believe i has 3DES installed.

If it doesn't, I believe you can register it with Cisco and get a free 3DES key.

The 501 can most certainly do VPN.

The feature you'll want to configure on it that will be the easiest and quickest to get you up and running is EasyVPN. If you search Cisco's site you should be able to find configuration docs for it. You'll need the Cisco VPN Client as well.

I got down to where I am connected to the PIX via VPN. But for some reason I cannot see the network. I ran the VPN Wizard, but it doesn't show any of the computeres connected to the PIX. Cisco wants 400 dollars to help me with this, any help would be appreciated :)

Turns out I can pink the local address of all the computers on my network, but I can't see them under my networks.

Are you authenticating to the Window Domain (making an assumption here)?

Just tried setting it up again using CIsco VPN Client, again can connect and ping computers on network but nothing showing up in My Network Places. Is there a setting in Windows or the PIX I am forgetting? I just ran the VPN wizard and followed all of the instructions. Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks.
