Pivoting monitors

Occasionally, I like to rotate my monitor to portrait mode to do word processing. On the old machine I am using now, I hqve to dig pretty deep into settings to rotate the image into portrait mode. Its annoying enough that I often just decide not to rotate it.

I am building a new box that includes a Gigabyte 6600GT. I have heard of monitors that rotate the image automatically when the monitor is rotated. No software settings, no nothing, just the image 'knowing' that the screen has been turned.

Is there such a beast? I've tried to Google same, but with no luck.

I'm not sure if such a monitor exists, but IMO it wouldn't be worth the money for that function alone if you already like your current monitor. You can go into the NView display settings and set up a shortcut key combination to toggle back and forth between portrait and landscape, however.
 
Ahh, I guess I just did not drill deeply enough before. I had a hard enough time even finding the pivot option in the nVidia software that it did not occur to me to go a couple of levels deeper to find a way to hotkey it.

Thanks. That solves my problem. Now, can you help me find a cheap monitor for my new overbudget build?

You'll probably have to get someone else's advice for that...I own a 2005FPW and I've never bothered to research anything smaller/cheaper 😛
 
Yes this can work. Prerequisites:

* The monitor would have to be on DVI since one can't generate disconnect/connect events on analog VGA plugs.

* The monitor would have change its "EDID" identification data in accordance to its current orientation.

When you pivot your monitor in such a setup, the display driver would see the monitor disconnect and then reconnect with altered identification, and this would trigger a display mode change.

Very few monitors do that though. Some circumvent the proper procedure with their own software - but with most, you'll have to set up some display driver based hotkey procedure.
 
It's not bad if you get a piece of software like ATI Tray Tools. I set it up so that I just use a hotkey and it rotates my screen for me. I just roate the screen, hit Ctrl + Alt + R and it rotates it 90 degrees, then when I'm done I put it back and press Ctrl + Alt + T. Piece of cake! You can set up whatever you like as they hotkeys.

If you find the right piece of third party software then it's a snap 🙂 .
 
That Viewsonic is a beauty, but about $500 over my budget!

I finally founf the hotkey option in the nVidia software. CTRL-ALT-R works both ways... from landscape to portrait and back again.
