Pitching an idea to a magazine company/ publisher, what happens afterwards?

I'm doing a business plan for one of my classes and it looks like its turning out pretty good. I don't want to put any of my money into it, but I want to give it a shot.

If I pitch my idea to a publisher and they like it what happend afterwards? Do they just take my idea and cut me a check? I want to make a copuple of bux, but I also want to work on the magazine too (It's MY baby).

anyone have experience piutching ideas to companies? What do I bring? Do i just show up and tell the guy my idea or do I show him my B. plan? Whats to keep him from saying no and then stealing my idea while I talk to someone else?

Thanks in advance

I would imagine they cut and paste the content, shred the copy you sent and publish it under a false name.....send you a big heap of squat.

That is if it is good.

"I want to publish a magazine about <subject>" is not a valid business plan.

There is no originality to it.

And if there were a sizeable enough readership base for such a magazine, something along those lines would already have been published.

Just do your homework and stop daydreaming, sonny.

Maybe no one has realized that there is a market for it yet.

If everyone had your attitude we'd never have anything new.

Just tink of Maxim magazine and then Stuff.

Anyway, even if my idea is not exactly new there is most likely room for clones too.

Maxim and Stuff are published by the same company. It's safe to assume that all the articles and pictorials that were swept up off the editor's floor at Maxim were later used in Stuff.

That being said, you miss 100% of the shots you don't take or whatever Wayne Gretzky once said.
What exactly have you got to lose?

Just try and sell it. At the end of your demo they'll probably say "We'll uhhhh call you later, Mr. Gotsmack."
And if they actually call, that's great.
If they don't, have you really lost anything except maybe a bruised ego?
