Pit bull attacks woman; man faces charges

(September 14, 2004) ? GENEVA - A Geneva man is scheduled to appear in Ontario County Court today in connection with a charge that he ordered his pit bull to maul an unidentified woman who lost her nose and suffered other severe facial lacerations in the attack.

Damian Mateo, 25, of 67 William St., was arrested early Monday morning after he allegedly ordered the dog to attack the woman with whom he had been arguing late Sunday night, according to information on file at Geneva City Court.

According to court records, Mateo "did intentionally cause a severe facial laceration to the victim by means of a dangerous instrument, that being a pit bull dog which the defendant did order to attack."

Geneva Police, who investigated the incident, which was reported at 11:38 p.m. on Sunday, declined today to comment or to make available a police report on the investigation.

Mateo was arraigned Monday in Geneva City Court on a charge of second-degree assault and ordered held at the Ontario County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond.

Ontario County District Attorney Michael Tantillo said Mateo is scheduled to appear in Ontario County Court tomorrow for a bail reduction hearing.

Tantillo said his office will oppose the bail reduction motion because of the reported viciousness of the attack.

Mateo also is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on the assault charge Sept. 20, depending on the condition of the victim who remains hospitalized from the attack, Tantillo said.

The Sept. 20 preliminary date could be changed if the victim remains hospitalized, he said. "It's a major, traumatic injury that she has suffered."

Tantillo said he was unable to disclose where the woman is hospitalized or whether her medical condition has stabilized since the attack.

The pit bull that inflicted the injuries on the woman has been impounded and is being held at the Ontario County Humane Society pending further legal action.

Tantillo said his office is continuing to review details of the case, but that the pit bull will likely be destroyed because of the viciousness of the attack and the seriousness of the victim's injuries.

"Nothing about this case is routine," the D.A. said. "We have so few serious dog attacks. But it would certainly be expected that for a dog that committed such a vicious and violent act to be put down at some point."

A runner was attacked by one in the local park near my house just a few days ago. The sad thing is that I hear that they can be some of the nices dogs in the world if trained that way. The problem is with the small penised morons that train them to be attack dogs.

Yes, I'm sure. But why is it that I hear and read about pitbull attacks 1000x more than other types of dogs?

I'm starting to be scared because new neighbors next door just moved in and have 3 pitbulls. my lab retriever is 10 years old and probably won't put up for much of a fight if their dogs jump the fence or something.

Pit bulls are illegal in South Florida unless you have a special license for them. For the most part they can be very nice dogs, but a majority of the people that own them do seem to suffer from small penis syndrome.

I've never been attacked by a pitbull. Is it that hard to kick their ass?

See your sig for a pretty good parallel to this. Pitbulls are fifty-pound wrecking balls of pure muscle. Unless you're armed or well-trained in self-defense, you will get a serious asskicking if you come across one bent on giving it to you.

Medium to large dogs of several breeds can be very dangerous if raised to be that way. As such, I'd be ok with permits being required to own dogs of said breeds. We have to have permits to own guns, why not require the same of dogs that can potentially be as dangerous as a gun?

Any dog can be dangerous if trained that way. Don't make an ADB - Assault Dog Ban - a reality.

easy, It makes for good news that a pitbull attacks someone. When a terrier attacks nobody care's (well the person gettting bitten).

the problem with pit bulls is when they go on the attack they do not give up. Once they get latched on to someone they do some major damage.

There are other breeds that are more likely to bite and attack. Problem is people with small penises don't get them because they do not look as mean.

Damn...

Some lady just got attacked by a pit bull on the Sea Wall here in Vancouver, and now there's word of a ban of pit bulls here.

It's real easy to say "Pit Bulls just need to be trained well, and then they are not dangerous". The fact of the matter is, most of the time when you see an American Pit Bull Terrier, it's dragging some moron up the street who bought it because it would scare everyone, and his buddies would all think he was cool. This dog likely has not had even the most rudimentary training other than a broomstick to it's butt. Rather, it's been teased and provoked so that it'll be mean and nasty.

The world isn't full of fully trained, well-adjusted APBT's with competent handlers.

Pit Bulls should be banned in cities, not because of the dogs themselves, but because of the idiots who own them. At the very least, you should have to go through training and become certified (much like a gun owner), before you can own an APBT, and the Pit Bull should also have to pass obedience and agitation tests as well.

Edit- I'll qualify this post. I have a German Sheppard. He's 2 and a half now. At 6 months of age, I could not control him. He would pull me up the street, and when we saw another dog, he would go completely ballistic. I'd have to carry him across the street while he was biting my arm the whole time so I'd let him go eat the dog. He'd suddenly decide some person was a threat to us, and try to attack them.
I took him to obedience class, and in just a few months, the difference was absolutely unbelievable. 2 years later, I can put him Down in the middle of a park full of yapping dogs running all around, walk away, and he'll still be there 10 minutes later, having never took his eyes off of me. Train your dogs!

I agree with this.

I realize that pit bulls can be very friendly dogs, but that's just not how it happens much of the time.

Dogs in and of themselves are not dangerous as a rule. It's the owners that make them bad!
My dog is 1/4 Pitt bull, 1/4 Rottweiler and 1/2 Chesapeake Bay Retriever and a more gentle dog you are not likely to meet. Ask anyone who's met Brutus, he's a sweetheart!

People just need a dog to blame, theres always a witchhunt going on. Before the pitbulls were widely known no one knew of them biting. By the way, these 120 lb pitbulls that you see aren't pitbulls, there mixed.

In the bites link, even though pit bulls are #1, how many of them are really pitbulls. And I'm sure theres more pitbulls than any other type of dog on the list.
