Anyone here own any piranhas? Just curious

Recently got mine....here are pics of the kind that I have

Serrasalmus Rhombeus

Have it in a 60 gallon. this one gets between 1-2 feet and when fully grown can amputate an adult wrist in 2-3 bites

Serrasalmus Spilopleura

Have this one in a 29 gallon...similar to the red-belly piranha, just better colors IMHO

Recently added 2 medium goldfish in the tanks...no more feeder guppies....the rhom took a little bite and ripped off most of the tail, while the spilo is chasing around the goldfish.

yup, they suddenly sprout legs and then go on rampant killing sprees 🙂

btw, i did a report on piranhas in elem. school. i thought they were so cool 😀

Just wondering what is the point of owning one of those? Do you eventually plan to let it go into the wild or what? Can those be found in the wild?

if somebody pisses you off, you tell them to pet your silver goldfish 😉

Pacus are a neat alternative to piranhas.... their vegetarian cousins... My brother's pacu is over 2 feet long and has outgrown his 75 gallon aquarium. Eats *anything* bags of carrots... bunches of grapes... mice, hamsters, other fish. All that can be in the tank is the fish and whatever gravel is put on the bottom. The pet store is amazed that it has outgrown the aquarium, "usually they break through the glass before they outgrow the tank." Everyone is impressed with the fish, but to him, it's now boring... 75 gallons for 1 fish... no plants or anything in the tank.

Did you see that movie where they send a nuclear submarine to fight the pirhanas, and one of them swims right down the periscope and bites the guy in the eye, and he goes, "Aah! Aah! Aah!", and that old lady told him it would happen?

dude...wtf

I'd be pretty damn pissed if my bitch of a fish busted through the glass and spilled water all over the damn floor. I'd probably throw that puppy on the grill and see who the badass is now!

yes, they can be found in the wild. VERY few kinds of piranha are breed in captivity. and if i had gotten the red-belly piranhas i would have attempted to make a saltwater piranha, but yeah, no red-belly piranhas

well, the rhom i have named bruno. i'm up for suggestions on the other one though. was thinking vegeta, but nah. bruno sounds cool. i want a mafia name for the spilo

that is WAY too small for the Pacu. And pacu's shouldn't be fed any meat items. it's basically 150 gallons PER Pacu. Pacu's are WAY too big for most people's budget. expect to pay several hundred dollars on a Pacu system

BTW, how old is the Pacu?
