Piracy worse than child pornography

Society's new perspectives

By Nick Farrell: Wednesday 26 April 2006, 06:44
THE NEW look Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA) seems to be giving the world an unusual moral code.

Details of the upgraded act, which has the blessing of the music and film industry and the Bush administration, are now coming to light. It appears that the DMCA will have a maximum sentence of ten years inside for the crime of software and music piracy. It will also give the FBI the powers to wiretap suspected pirates.

Although sentencing varies in the US, the new law does send a very strange message as to what the government considers 'bad' in the 21st century.

For example assaulting a police officer will get you five years, downloading child porn will get you seven years, assaulting without a weapon will get you ten years and aggravated assault six years.

So in other words if you copy a Disney CD and sell it you will be in the same league as a paedophile who is distributing pictures of sexual attacks on children.

If you copy Craig David's CD you get ten years, but if you punch him in the face and pummel him into a seven day coma you will only get six. You are more likely to get the respect of the prison population with your six year sentence as well.

It's rather simple, actually. They don't get $$ from rapists or pedophiles...

I'm going to go live in a fvcking cave...

Yeah, i saw that mentioned on DailyTech this morning.

I seriously am sickened by society, but really, moreso by the MPAA/RIAA.

It's simply amazing how much power these clowns have

Amazing what you can accomplish when you buy congress isn't it? I think I hear George Washington spinning in his grave.

Wouldn't it just be easier in the long run to just imprison everyone in the country? Everyone's probably violated at least one law at some time in their lives. Better safe than sorry.

This is the kind of idiocy that happens when the concept of representative democracy is corrupted by corporate fascism.

Piracy ain't got nothing on corporate crime, aka white-collar crime. It's not ok to copy CDs, download kiddy porn, shoot a copy, but it's perfectly ok to steal millions from employee pension plans, insider trading, cooking the books, starting Fox News Network.

We've got to combat this type of bill by reaching out to our Senators and local Representatives. Granted, digital piracy is stealing...but 10 years for it??? I'm not proud to be an American if this shvt passes, let alone a Texan...sheesh.

The people that write these laws and try to get them enacted aren't stupid at all.
They know where the money for their next electoral campaign comes from, and are willing to do just about anything to make sure they get it.

Dont be confused. This is not a partisan issue. You can blame Democrats as well as Republicans, because rest assured either party would be doing this for all the bucks they are getting from the likes of:

Disney (Extended certain copyrights from what used to be a couple of decades to 100 years!!!!!!) This is what happened in 1998, and will happen again in 2018.

RIAA, MPAA (see above)

Microsoft and the BSA et al. (always taking action).

The best example I can think of is the Beatles. Why should works made close to 40 years ago still be protected by copyright? Marilyn Monroes likeness and image cant be used unless you pay some worthless fat cat a percentage? WTF? AND any time these idiots (or their descendants, heirs, benefactors, assings, agents, or the eventual corporations that buy any last residual) reach any kind of stuatory limit on their ability collect moolah they just bribe the government to allow them to continue collecting for decades and decades more.

Fair use is a dinosaur and will be completely extinct in our lifetimes if the RIAA, MPAA, Disney and Microsoft, etc have their way.

They will collect for thousands of years.
