Piracy question: Why do people make/download cams?

Something I don't understand is why people make/download cams and tc's. They look like crap, sound like crap, and seem like a big waste of time and bandwidth. Now I haven't seen a cam for 3 years now, have there been major improvements or something?

RIAA has your IP now.

meh. i don't mind paying $10 to see a flick in the theatres anymore, or $5 to rent the DVD. it's all about the quality baby!

Like cams as in people who go into theaters and record off the screen directly. A "TC" is a telesync where they record off the screen but have a diferent audio source.

Clarify? Cams/tc's?

Cams = go to theater with digital camcorder and a tripod (and sometimes w/o a tripod!) and film the movie and use the camcorder's stereo mic for audio.

TC = telecine = same as a cam but they get the audio from an audio jack that's provided for the deaf and hard of hearing. Basically a cam with higher quality audio

That's what I figured when I saw cams, but then I saw TC and was confused. ^_^

But yeah, I don't download movies...anymore. Ruins the movie with its shitty quality.

Wrong.

A "TS" is a telesync where they record off the screen using a professional camcorder in an empty theatre, using a different audio source.

A "TC" is a telecine where it is a reel to digital conversion.

A "Cam" is simply filming a movie with a crappy home video camcorder.

I stand corrected.

From past experience, pretty damn good. Not quite up to DVD, but not bad at all. This was the format of choice for many groups before it become practicle and popular to do DVD releases of Screeners and such.

TC's are also pretty rare as many groups don't have access to whatever technology is used to rip from the film reel.

Compare it to a TS:

and a Cam:

Does it have to be a crappy camera?

Is he kidding? Cams are all over- Heck, that's how I first saw The Incredibles! (I went to the theater after that and liked it MUCH better though).

Bastard. 😀 No it doesnt, it could be a professional camera also, but it's still of marginal quality at best.

why do people download cams? i'll tell you -- they want to see the movie immediately without waiting for the DVD release. a cam is released within 2-3 days of the movie's release, while a DVD rip is released many months later.

^ yup, it's released much earlier. I'd say those who grab these will likely never pay for it anyway.
