how quickly does it spit it back out? does it spin up and try to read? if not, then it sounds like a mechanism issue. I highly doubt this is a jumper setting issue.

any other discs to try?

It's like the car CD players, that you insert the disc.
Doesn't have a tray to put the disc.

ya, I know what a slot load is - I didnt know pioneer made a slotload
However I just googled it and I guess they did = like the DVD106S

In answer to the question - there is a pinhole in all Optical drives that allows you to open the tray manually
with an opened paper clip. In the hole is a plastic rod that is the release button. If this rod rubs against the
hole it may be stuck in the "in" or opening position. The fix to this prob is to remove and carefully replace faceplate.

A slot load presents a mor interesting situation. It woulsd also HAVE to have an ejector, since it would be too difficult
to remove just the disc.

It could be a hardware hic-up due to age or breakdown, but my bet would be an OS or "firmware" call by an errant or malicious program.

Most Operating Systems and CD-ROM firmware have low-level function calls to open the cd drawer. Make a note of the programs that are running when it happens. One of them is probably calling the OS function.

trying to load a CD while booting will tell you if its a hardware or software prob

+++++++++++++++

and more far out - if a CD exploded inside, the pieces will do that

I have this drive. I'd love to see more slot load drives out there.

I doubt it's a jumper setting, I don't know what jumper you could change to make it do that.

Does it do that just in Windows, or will it do it during POST and bootup?

slim chance
You could try to open it and see if anything got loose inside.

I've a 105S, still running strong after 5 years - absolutely love it!

Once I had a slot loading CD-Rom and ever since, I never bought one again. They are just unreliable. When it starts to do what yours is doing i.e. spitting it out even before it tries to read it, the mechanism is basically dead. I highly recommend replacing it with a tray loading. Sure slot loading is cool, but very unreliable.

yea.... i took apart the face plate, took out the button, took off the felt, took out the led thing. then painted it and sanded it and painted it a few times, them glued it all back together and reinstalled the face plate. . . . did you actually think that i would do that while it was put together?
