Here's the problem. I just got done installing Windows XP Pro off the DVD drive on a freshly built computer for a friend. After realizing that Windows XP didn't have the drivers needed for his nForce board, I tried using the CD that came with the motherboard. After loading it in the drive, the drive would spin up and not recognize the CD. So I checked it with my computer and it worked fine. I put an audio CD in the DVD drive and that read fine. Can anyone suggest a solution to fix this?

ASUS A7N266-VM
AMD Athlon XP 1500
512 MB PC2100 Micron DDR
80 GB Maxtor
Pioneer DVD116 16X DVD
Sanyo 40X CD-RW
Windows XP Pro

Sounds like a hardware compatibility issue. Did you try it on your cd-rw drive? I know that i've had issues with xp and my pioneer 106s(slot load dvd drive), and I know of others who have had issues with other(newer) dvd-roms & xp as well.

There is a similar issue discussed in this Microsoft knowledge base article.

Although it doesn't sound like this is your specific problem the steps outlined in the article fixed a similar problem for me.

[Edit] Here is the important information from the article:

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, follow these steps:
If Windows Explorer or My Computer is running it, quit it.
Click Start , and then click Control Panel .
Click Printers and Other Hardware , and then click System under See Also . (If you use Classic view in Control Panel, double-click System .)
On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager .
Expand DVD/CD-ROM .
Click the appropriate device, and then click Uninstall on the Action menu.
When you are prompted to confirm that you want to remove the device, click OK .
On the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes . This causes Windows to recognize new devices.
Quit Device Manager and Control Panel.
