hi there, i remember reading awhile back that pioneer would stop production of its own panels sometime this year.

i would like to upgrade my Panasonic 42 PX600 , which is 1080i, and replace it with a Pioneer Kuro PDP-LX608D.

however due to financial reasons, the earliest i could buy one, outright, would be around this time next year.

do you think its likely i could get my hands on one by may 2009?

also what about pricing, do you think the kuro series would drop alot in the future? right now the PDP-LX608D is 4500GBP

thanks

I think you would be pretty hard pressed to find a PDP-LX608D a year from now. Pricing has already been cut to make room for the new models.

I gotta be honest, there is absolutely no reason to even be looking at TV's right now when you wont buy till May 2009. There are several reasons for this:

1. You are still looking at a 2007 model, which will likely be unavailable in 2009.
2. The new models always have a slightly lower MSRP than the previous years equivalent model, and a myriad of upgrades as well.
3. Stores rarely discount older models even when the new ones are out, because the new one cost less to them, so they just hope some random uninformed consumer comes in and takes the last few in stock off their hands and they don't take much of a hit off it.

My suggestion, is keep an eye on the 2009 CES show coverage to see which Pioneer model you are interested in and then pick it up a few weeks after it comes out once prices below MSRP stabilize. By then 60in Plasmas will definitely be cheaper than today and the featureset will be much better than the LX608D. Also just because Pioneer isnt making their panels doesn't mean the quality will go down. By the time Pioneer switches to Panasonic panels, Panasonic will have adopted several of Pioneer's panel patents, and Pioneer will still have one of the better processors in the industry (and 2 years better), which is still the main reason Pioneer Kuro have the best rated picture.

thanks for the replies

your advice makes sense krotchy and i appreciate it

so, panasonic will be producing the new kuro panels and not Sharp?

im not the biggest fan of my panny PX600. its got some issues, mainly the black levels are a grainy grey, and the purple snake fuzzy stuff.

am i right in thinking both pioneer and panasonic panels are currently made by Matsushita?

For this year I believe they will still be Pioneer for Pioneer and Matsushita for Panasonic. Sharp does not produce any Plasma panels, though they might be the ones supplying Pioneer with their LCD panels, but I am not sure at all on that, because I think only Pioneer LCDs will be available in Europe for a while and Ive never looked into it.

For 2009, Matsushita will be making all plasmas for Pioneer and Panasonic. I honestly think that these panels will be better for everyone, because with Panasonics market share and Pioneers patents the two will have the cost center and patent knowledge to crank out something amazing, also with another year of research under their belts things can only improve. I would expect you will be quite happy with your 2009 Pioneer, and it will blow even the 2007 models everyone loves so much right now out of the water.

p.s. Have you looked at the 800 series Panasonics in a store yet. The difference between the 600 you have and this years 800 series is almost night and day, its really quite amazing how fast TV technology is improving.

krotchy,

At the pace the technology is improving, should one buy now or keep waiting. I've been thinking of dropping around $1500 or so on a 46" 1080P LCD TV if I can find a decent quality one in that price range or close too it. I'm not really sure what to do.

From what I have read on avs (I too am looking to buy a 9G kuro) this should be the pricing on the new models:

5020 - $4000
111fd - $5000
6020 - $5500
151fd - $6000

The loaded gun question, lol. My best answer to this is wait around for a deal on a current year model from a upper tier brand that fits what you want (as in not Vizio, Olevia, Westinghouse, Insignia, Sceptre etc.). Getting last years model almost always results in you sacrificing something that you might not be aware of initially, and the processing, which is probably the most important part of any TV always going to be better with next years model. Thankfully the 2008's just popped out of the factories within the last couple months, so current Tech is mostly new Technology.

as an example of why I suggest an upper tier brand....

My first foray into an HDTV was a Sceptre 42" 1080p TV from costco. SD on the thing was just plain awful, the inputs were sketchy and the TV was just poor. Thank god I could return that, as it was a mess and a half, and their support was like talking to monkeys. Even after I told the guy I was an electrical engineer and he didnt have to speak to me like a child, he still didnt have a clue what was going on.

I traded it in for a 47" 1080p Vizio and I liked the TV overall, but it still was not quite what I had hoped. I would have kept it and just dealt with the downfalls, but the HDMI ports on the TV shorted together, making it so if I had both HDMI boxes on at once the TV would get sparkly all over. So I had to return it to Costco, since at the time, they would'nt take a trade in but only a straight refund. After the trade in, I realized that not having dynamic contrast hurts the picture from my point of view and the SD was still pretty bad compared to other TV's.

My 3rd TV in the string was the Phillips 47PFL7422 (Top of the line Philip's without ambilight). I love this TV with a passion. Fantastic picture, much much much better SD than the Vizio (though not the best admittedly). The black levels are not the best especially compared to this years models, but I honestly have nothing legit to complain about, while I always did with the Sceptre and Vizio.

To me, when you buy a lower tier brand you pretty much always end up sacrificing something important, despite the fact that the specs might look close to the real brand, the processing and features are usually nowhere near the bigger ones. Also the lower tier brands have some pretty interesting repair records (read the "your new disposable TV" article), though a few of the companies are getting better I hear. My roommate had an issue with getting his TV repaired by Vizio and they were pretty crappy about it, and in the end they only repaired it after he paid shipping to them of like 50 bucks. Luckily mine was from Costco for an easy return when mine broke.

So yeah, if you wanna buy now, find a Sony, Sharp, Philips, Samsung, Toshiba, LG, Panasonic, Pioneer, etc. TV that fits your needs exactly. If you dont find one, next year they will be better and cheaper. I want to upgrade my living room TV to a 52" TV but Im in no hurry and I don't think this years models will improve over my Phillips as much as I want, so I am waiting for next year. In the end, its all about Processing Processing Processing! So I hope next year is my year, lol.
