Pioneer introduces new 10X SCSI DVD-ROM drive

Something strange happened. Pioneer removed the press release from the press release page but the url still exists. Also the 10x SCSI DVD-Rom drive was announced at November (DR-U04S) so either was some mixup or the DVD-U05S is the coming 16x SCSI model which probably announced by mistake 🙂

"...Pioneer Europe announced today the availability of a new 10X SCSI DVD-ROM drive. The new DVD-U05S has improved performance and quality compared to its predecessors. It is the world?s fastest SCSI drive proving Pioneer position as leader in DVD technology.

With a transfer rate of 13.5MB/s (max.); a faster average access time for DVD-ROM of 95ms (80ms for CD-ROM); also seek time has been reduced from 90msec to 85sec (70msec for CD-ROM). Compatibility with CD-DA/ROM/R/RW/Extra/Video CD and DVD-ROM/R/RW/VIDEO the drive is truly more versatile with multiple possible applications.

Product Manager for Pioneer Europe?s Multimedia Division (Optical), Chris Tampsett commented: "Pioneer is one of the leading companies in the DVD market. We are the only one company for any type of DVD model. Tray loading, slot-in loading model, and also ATAPI I/F and SCSI I/F model. For SCSI model, is the one for the professional user."

The new 10X SCSI drive is also available in bulk version (DVD-305S) and both models are available now from Pioneer subsidiaries across Europe..."

It might have been removed because the press release is dated December 12th. 🙂 Maybe it's too early!

they mention some really fast seeks, but i wonder what the transfer rates are. cant wait to see this matched up against plextor's new offering (or soon to be offered i hope) come on storage review, get one!

Region locking is not a requirement. Aopen's new 16X DVD is region unlocked. My Asus 8X is not region locked and it was manufactured in September 2000, I believe.

jimmygates:

I heard the way pioneer names goes like this

10xS, is IDE region locked (x=4 is 10x, 5 is 16x)
A0xS, is IDE non-region locked
30xS, is SCSI region locked
U0xS, is SCSI not region locked

(if the 0 is a 1 then it's Tray instead of slot)

I'm not 100% sure about the 1 and A difference, but when you flash the BIOS on a 104S to a region free BIOS it becomes an A04S...so I think that's the difference.

Or once I also heard that the letter is OEM and the number is retail (or vice versa)

I can't confirm this stuff, but that's what I've heard...it's some small difference like that...

Either which way the 3/U are the same physical drive (SCSI), the 1/A are the same physical drive (IDE). The second 0 or 1 tells you if it's slot or tray, the 3rd number tells you the speed. (They all seem to have an S tacked onto the end though I'm not sure what it's for)

you theory is a little flawed at least, because my pioneer 103s is a 6x dvd that is unlocked. it was my impression that simply everything after the 103s is region locked (unless you do some firmware hack)

So besides faster seek times and the possiblity of being region free, what are other advantages of this drive over the 304S? I just got my Pioneer 304S 10x DVD today and I still have the chance to return it if the U04S is better.

The difference between the "3" and the "U" is (i believe) that the U's are retail and the 3's are basically bulk oem. They should be the same drives essentially, but I would assume that the 3's are slightly less expensive. Also I found some info about the U05S:
Pioneer U05S
Looks like it is just a 10x scsi. They do have a 16x atapi, so maybe Pioneer will release a 16x scsi as well. I'm looking to get one of these drives, in case anyone finds a good deal on em.
Also, is region locking only a concern if you live outside the states?
