Pioneer "Elite" VSX-44 for $169....good deal?

I found a Best Buy store locally that has a closeout for a Pioneer "Elite" VSX-44 A/V receiver. Very basic and not exactly a powerhouse, but for a secondary receiver, for $169 as an open box unit, good buy?

It looks like new, has warranty, all accy's, etc.

I've been comparing it to a Denon E400 I found for $295. Both are close in features, but neither would be used for primary A/V duty, only as a bedroom setup.

Pioneer decent enough, esp. for the $$?

what are you planning to do with your "secondary" receiver? will it doing any DTS decoding and stuff? or just playing music? Pioneer isn't exactly the top of the line... but the price is really good!

Hi. OK....my "main" system, which is in another abode, is a pair of Paradigm Studio 20's feeding off an NAD 757. What this system is doing is "musicifying" a second abode while its being slowly rehab'd. What was there was an old Onkyo TX-SR600 pushing a pair of Mission M71's. The Onkyo recently began having problems, so the search for something cheap yet decent. From what I've read so far, this line of Pioneers isn't too bad for sound.

It'll only run a 2.1 setup. and while connectivity isn't a priority, it's got a decent selection. Honestly, I'd almost just rather buy a 2 ch. receiver, but their prices vs. what this is selling for make that avenue ludicrous.

Otherwise, I've found a Denon X1000 for $230 and E400 for $250. But for the price, can't say the two Denons are that much better in any respect. Not saying the Pioneer would be my first choice, but given the price, almost hard not to take it.

Last time I was shopping (5ish years ago) Pioneer Elite had a really good reputation. I definitely get the impression that they have cheapened the brand since then.

It looks like a pretty solid receiver though. If it was sitting in front of me for $169 I would already own it.

I have one of the non-Elite VSX receivers and I can't complain about it.

The VSX-44 normally sells for $500, so I wonder why it's going for so cheap. That's a really good price for a HDMI 2.0 receiver.

lol, I never bothered to look up "VSX-44". I just assumed it was a cheap older model... Damn, it's a damn fine receiver!!! and for that price it's a steal, a robbery 😀. Grab one for sure if you have not already done so, doesn't matter even if it was one of their magnolia demo piece

I'll find out Sunday. "Reserved" it. It's Best Buy open box clearance, so won't know really what I'll find until go pick it up. Supposedly it's in "excellent" condition, as graded by the store. The store did say it'll have its full warranty, etc.
