I got Pioneer A08XL yesterday. I have this machine with windows ME on it. The
drive is set as Master.
But the device manager identifies this drive as a CD Rom drive. I think its something to do with Windows ME. May be I'll need a updated driver to support dvd burners.

Without this, I cannot do the region setting. Please help?

I believe that is how Windows ME recognises all optical devices and no other drivers are needed apart from the Windows ones.
Have you tried right clicking the drive in device manager> properties and see if the region tab is available?

Yes, I have. But there is no place for me to set the region setting.

I have Nero 6.3 and DVD shrink installed on my machine. Nero InfoTool was showing that I have all 5 tries remaining to set the region. It was also showing write speed as 32X and read speed as 40X.

Later, I installed the Ulead software that came in a CD with this drive. During installation it asked me about region. My device manager CDROM ---> DVR 108 --> poperties, is still NOT showing any option to allow me to change the region setting.
Now when I started Nero InfoTool, then it shows that I have 4 tries remaining, but its showing both read and write speed as 8X.

Therefore I have uninstalled Ulead software and Nero InfoTool again shows speeds as 40X and 32X, for read and write respectively.

Any idea whats going on??

Odd that!
Have you tried updating your ASPI layer? If yes then I can only suggest you try flashing the drive' s firmware.

Yes, everything appears to be working as normal. Is there a problem using the drive, to either play, or record DVDs? Why are you so fascinated with the region-setting? The first time that you try to play a CSS-protected disc in an RPC-2 drive, the player app, during the key negotiations (I think - not totally sure), has to also choose a default RPC2 region-code setting. Apparently, the Ulead software that you refer to must have done that? To burn DVDs, all that matters is the burning program, the region-coding has nothing to do with burning, only with playback of CSS-protected DVD-Video content. Also, I could be wrong, but I think that only W2K/XP have a CD-ROM property-page that shows the region information. Under Win9x, they all show up as CD-ROMs.
