Was wondering what the difference is between there 2 Pioneer DVDR's might be?
Besides price
When on the Pioneer website could find no mention of DVR-108
Anand Tech reviewed this drive but does not mention DVR-A08
How do they compare spec wise

DVR 108 is the OEM version, no software included and the faceplate is different from the retail version.

They are the same drive, internally. Only the face plate is different. What you don't read in the OEM description doesn't mean features are not there.

Found these ON the Pioneer site.

OEM DVR-108

Retail DVR-A08XL

Nope, they're slightly different internally as well. Their firmware is not interchangeable. There are a couple of minor features that the 108 is missing.

Once again they are not as I've built Rigs with both and the A08XL has:
3. Performance Adjusting Firmware
Quiet Drive
Internal retooling used in conjuction with performance adjusting firmware reduces operating noise.
Performance Adjusting Firmware
Automatically adjusts between Performance mode and Quiet mode. Achieves an ideal solution by lowering disc rotation for quieter drive performance during DVD Video and Audio CD playback, while speeding up for high performance when required.

If the OEM will handle it please enlighten me how so I can save a few Clients $'s!

Well I stand corrected. I see there are physical differences.
Pioneer has a quiet utility that works with both retail and oem A07, 107, A08 and 108.
I am not sure if it will work with mine though. (DVR-108BK) i'll have to look into it when I get a chance though.

Here's a link.

[edit] I bought the DVR-108 because the DVR-107 I have been using in my HTPC was the quietest optical I had ever purchased.

I too got the 108 because my Custom Faceplate could be changed with the 106 and it is queit but does not adjust as read here in the differences.
So for this reason, looks, added software, plus disc(s) and box makes the difference between the 2.
