I recently purchased this drive and have been using showbiz to author divx movies and mpegs. works fine but take forever to encode. Anyway, I have been using the pioneer DVD-RW disc and it plays fine on all my dvd players, laptops etc. I went out and bought some Memorex DVD-RW and it works fine on my home player but not on my laptop!?!?! Why? its rated 1.1 like the pioneer. What gives. Any insight would be great. Oh, and is there anyway to author dvds FASTER then showbiz? It literally has to play the movie, a bit slower than normal, then process it, the burn. Usually takes 2-4 hours sometimes!

It depends on what exactly you want to do with your DVD's. If you want to just take video straight from your camera and put it on DVD I would just capture it to disk with Pinnacle Studio, encode with TMPGenc, and then burn to DVD with Sonic MyDVD. Then delete the raw captured video and burn DVD's whenever you want with the TMPGenc encoded files.

If you want to custom edit the video and put in chapter selections and all that then you are going to have to wait for it to encode each time, I think most software takes quite a while to encode. I use Pinnacle Express and I imagine it's about as fast as Showbiz.

You could try authoring the whole movie in Showbiz and then outputting in DV-AVI format, then encode with TMPGenc, then burn with Sonic MYDVD, it might take a bit less time?? The only way to find out is try the different software and see which way works best for you. Look for sales on Pinnacle Studio and Pinnacle Express - that way you can experiment for cheap.

I do not do camcorder dvd's, but i have been encoding many DVD's I use a program called DVD2DVDR, well this program does the encoding for me using CCE, this takes sometimes 6 hours! To author I am using meastro this only takes 30 mins and that is adding subtitles and chapters, then I run the authored movie through Ifo edit just because it seems to work out the kinks this takes a little longer about 30 mins extra but makes the movie playable in many players. Very long process bet your not to worried about what speed your media is. LOL

Yeah but thats Pioneer Australia, will it work with mine? In the US its www.pioneerelectronics.com and when I go to look for the firmware only 1.00 is available. Have you tried it on an American model?

I've only messed with ripping one DVD and I don't recall it taking that long. I used the SmartRipper-IFOEdit-Nero method described here:

IfoEdit Guide

I couldn't get chapters to work though and the disk (the one that came with the drive) would not play on my Pioneer DV-343. I have burned home videos on Ritek G03's and cheap Princo DVD-RW's and they have played fine.

I/m not trying to rip dvds. I am just authoring divx and mpegs i made of home video and stuff. I notice there is no memorex media listed on the web as being recommended. I wonder if memorex just plain sux. Anyway, I did the flash and it took, but I havent tried burning to a memorex dvd-rw. I'll try tonight and see if it works on my laptop.

Oyeve...Memorex (made in Taiwan) is not top quality compared to the Pioneer, TDK, and Taiyo Media which is Made in Japan and has stricter Quality Control...You are Burning Family keepsake Media and I would suggest using the latter to insure many years of preserved video IMO.
