they are already flaming, i think in the cheapest in pricewatch is 268+shipping. newegg has them for 299 under the name A04 which is the OEM model. 236 is a excellent price for the drive.

Too bad it's a geek special and the 10% coupon can't be applied. Otherwise, it would be really tempting.

I believe the A04 is Retail and the 104 is OEM...
The site says it's the 104 drive and at the bottom it says:

DVD-R/RW and/or CD-R/RW Media -- NOT Included
DVD Decoding Software -- NOT Included
DVD & CD Burning Software -- NOT Included

no matter how cheap these gets, i think the biggest drawback for me is the price of media. i think i can dish out 200+ one time for a drive but i dont think i can dish out over a buck per disc for DVD-R. when the media price falls to the point where i can throw out a messed up disc without worrying, then i'm in :)

I have torched over 100 and never have I had a bad disk, or bad copy. When in doubt I copy to rw first. ;)

Anyone thinking about using recordable DVD for storage only?

I think the myriad of recordable/rewriteable standards and questionable compatibility with today's DVD *players* has been holding us back. But, if I knew I'd be using this for data only, there's not as many reasons to resist the urge any longer.

-SUO, paid $260 for his last burner (although it was a DVDROM/CDRW combo drive that sill works 18+ months later)

I remember when CDRs were $19.99 for a TWO pack.... the DVD media will come down real soon.

I had this drive about 2-3 month. It is exelent and I have yet to "fry" any medium.
I got a 100 pack DVD-r for 90$ Online. Yes... not the best but for the suff I do it will do just fine.
Biggest drawback is that it takes about an hour to burn a DVD. But that too is excusable for the amount you are burning.
I backed up a few things on DVD-RW and that is also working without a hitch. Cheap backup is a reality again! :)

Why not use dvd-rw?
or are their advantages of using dvd-r over dvd rw?

Can I copy digital video to DVD using this drive through firewire/digital video camera?

Can I wathc DVD movies using this drive?

Can people copy DVD movies using this drive although I prefer to jsut spend the $10 for an original?

Since this drive does not include software, can someone recommedn good software to accomplish the above items.

thanks

Since Pioneer doesn't officially supports the OEM DVR-104, you can upgrade firmware 1.20 and make you driver regional free. Link. Has anyone use the Meritline DvdPro 4.7GB DVD-R Media General Use for $1.05 Link? How are they compared to Princo?

Yes. Just get the video onto your hard drive using a capture card, etc and then author a DVD using a commercial package.

This drive should allow you to watch anything on DVD, I'd prefer a lite-on drive personally but why not.

Yes you can copy movies but there are still issues... older movies (or smaller movies) will copy over 1:1 after being decrytped.

Sonic DVDit is pretty good. Scenarist is good but complicated. Ulead DVD Movie Factory.

I remember back in the day (mid to late 90's) when I was at Fry's B&M with my friend who desperately wanted a CD-RW. He paid $268 for a 2x Smart & Friendly, now you can buy a 32x CD-RW for $30 after rebates ... technology ARGH!

I remember paying $198 for a Plextor 12/10/32 which at the time was a VERY good price (everyone else was paying $250) but I still should have waited until the prices dropped.

So until all the incompatibility issues get ironed out, the drives are at least 16x and media is at least 10 cents each I think I'll sit on the fence eating my Pringles, waiting, waiting, waiting.

I'll be waiting a good 2 years I figure, maybe less maybe more.

I had to jump on this one. Man, they have had some good specials these last couple of weeks. Bought that Cybergenie phone system over the weekend. Spending some cash to save some cash I guess.

Yeah, that cybergenie thing looked cool. Too bad the voice prompts were ala Joshua from "War Games" - Synthetic city. :)

dvd burners are coming out faster and faster each week, i would wait 3-6 mos before buying one..not only will prices keep dropping but you'll get better technology then rushing in now.
