Pioneer DVD-R issues? Experiences?

I am currenty looking at a Pioneer DVR-A03 DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW. I've seen it for a little over $400 and that is getting near my price range.

Does anyone have any experiences with this drive? My plan is to use it for creating my own DVD movies, as well as backing up a few of my favorite DVD's from my collection. Is there some media that won't work for backups? I know the DVD-R standard (or lack thereof) is very young. Should I wait for a while and see how things shake down?
