I am in the market for a home theater, specifically a DVD player and speakers.

I've been looking around and found the Pioneer HTD-510DV system. I was wondering if anyone has any problems with their Pioneer DVD player. Also, if anyone uses this home theater could you give me some highs and lows.

I've also been looking at the Sony DAV-S300. I was wondering how the two systems compare.

I would of course also take any suggestions on any home theater system <$500 mark (DVD player included).

Thanks! :D

Pioneer's stand-alone players are great, but quality and features are always sacrificed in those boxed HT things.
I was going to suggest www.audioreview.com but neither of those systems are reviewed there yet. Are they new models?

Pioneer DVD players are probably among the best at any price.
They have good features and a mechanically sound transport.

I may have seen one of those Pioneer home theator things in action yesterday...I didn't ask my buddy which model it was. I was impressed though, his living room is decent size, and it filled it with sound. The subwoofer is fairly good as well. This one had a 3 or 5 disc changer I believe. It played burnt CDR's just fine as well, so if thats important, you'll be pleased. I think as long as your room isn't massive, it'd work just fine.

I've had one about 2 years, lightning took out the power supply (fixed under warranty) other than that, no problem. Once in a great while it will have de-coding farts ( artifacts on screen and such) but these are few and far between, and may be more due to a particular DVD than the unit itself.

Also reads about any CD-R you toss in it.

I use two of the DV-F727 models and I have had no problems thus far. From what I have learned through research, they are a pretty safe bet.

I don't know much about home theaters but it seems that these specs are better than the Sony DAV-S300 below correct?

Brushed aluminum fronted D-ceiver and 7-inch sub-woofer coordinate with the look of Sony?s new pure Wega TVs
Color-matched set of five micro satellite speakers (front/center/surround) with 2.75-inch full-range drivers
All connections are color coded (white for front left speaker; green for center speaker etc); simple plug-in connection on the back of the D-ceiver; and pre-stripped tinned bare wires fitted at the other end for insert to the spring-mount speaker terminals

Thanks for the link rml.
I couldn't find the entire home theater (I think maily dvd players listed there). Does anyone recognize the model of dvd player comes with this model? I can't tell from the picture.

Can anyone tell me from the features I listed above if this system is lacking in anything? (for example this model has built-in Dolby Digital/DTS/Pro Logic decoding which I heard is a good thing)

Thanks.

I have that Pioneer system and I tell you that thing rocks! Try playing any DTS DVD there--esp. Saving Private Ryan-- and be ready for the neighbors to complain. You can also hook up your TV and/or VCR to it and watch TV shows in Dolby Surround. Band of Brothers sounds so good in that. Go for it. I got mine for $450 at a B&M so your price is a deal.

The player doesn't sell on its own I think. It's made for a HT-in-a-box because it's not only a player, but has the decoder/amp built-in...

Some people will be satisfied with a all-in-one setup like that, it's probably enough for a small room, but you get much better quality when you buy separate components. If you don't want to spend too much now, what I'd do is buy a DVD player, a decent receiver, and stereo speakers now. When you have more money, you can add the center, sub, rears... I know it doesn't sound like a good idea now, but you'll eventually end up with a system that'll be a lot better than what you're looking at.

But if you're set on a budget, and won't have more money to spend on it in the future, then the Pioneer looks good. I heard Kenwood and JVC were also decent for HTs in-a-box. And yes, make sure it has DD and DTS.

<< be ready for the neighbors to complain >>

- hehe... that's a good thing cuz I have these two rather large women that live above me and my roommate and I have caught them doing aerobics at 1:00AM on more than one occasion :|. Gonna aim all my speakers straight up when I go home on the weekends and play "Baby Got Back" on a loop at full volume.

Sugadaddy - Yeah, I heard that I should put together the system myself but I am a poor college student . Don't have the money. But some day... I'm thinking projection home movie theater :D.
