I have a Pioneer - I think 117 - slot DVD and since it gets used pretty often I was wondering what would be the best way to clean and maintain? Do I use the same head cleaning discs that they sell for regular DVD players? I'm kind of leery of that because I know someone who did and afterwards the DVD in his PC was considerably noisier, even though it still worked. Any suggestions?

I strongly recommend you not do anything as long as it is working properly. A cleaning disc could possibly do more damage than good (not to mention they don't work well in the first place).

jakobkraft, to paraphrase MWink, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I have a floppy drive that does not have a door on the front, and while there is quite a bit of visable dust inside, I'm not going to do anything about it. The last time I tried to clean a floppy drive out it never worked the same again, hope this helps.

DO NOT use CD/DVD unit cleaner made for stand alone audio or video players on computer drives. They're meant to be spun around at 530RPM. A modern 56x CD-ROM spins a disc at 11,200 RPM. Imagine what that will do to the pickup unit.

like everyone is saying, don't mess with it.
but if you think there is dust inside, i think a small burst of canned air would clear it out.
